I had one and loved it, I only sold it so the missus could learn to drive :(

think it used to average about 30-32mpg and drive really well.

common faults I incured were cable mech for electric window snapping causing window to drop into door and the rear washers disconnect inside the tail gate, this caused the boot lock to fault and the alarm to go off repeatedly at 3am lol

apart from that it ran great for 2 years of ownership, from 70k miles to 84k miles.

Rebuilding the window is a right pain in the **** lol had to do it on the passat too.

mk4 - 1.8T have had coil pack issues. they take it in turns to pop
clutch peddle can brake where rod is held in, simple re-weld - replacement peddles also have rubbish spot weld.
front and rear washers - plastic brittle pipes snap in boot and leak around boot sensor - also around collar on front pump joints. a conversion to small rubber with cable ties is the fix. bit fiddly under the bonnet to fix.
flappy bushes in front suspension
plastic impeller on water pump can fail.
engine under trays often break where it joins with plastic inner wing and drag along the floor.

in the 5 years i have owned a mk4 2.0 8v its been pretty reliable. (touch wood) -replaced starter motor, coil, leads, fixed washers. and re-welded clutch peddle with new clip.

Intresting as the one im picking up this weekend has a missfire so the coilpacks should be the first port of call then

yep,

when i say common, i mean every couple of weeks! i think there was a recall for it

When replacing coils use genuine ones or you'll be doing it all the time

some people change them all instead of one at a time, as well as using genuine VW.

useful link.

Are turbos pretty long life on these then or do they implode after so many miles?

Fairly long life iirc.

frind of mine always kept a socket set and 4 coil packs in his Octavia vrs pos just in case (and that was under warranty)

this was my old one,i loved it..only sold it because my girlfriend needed a diesel so we bought a fabia vrs but on a run the golf got 39 mpg taking it easy.get a timing belt kit and water pump done if you are unsure of the history of the car..small electric gremlins are standard with most vag models, noisy starter motors(sounds like a duck being strangled) but overall i never had many problems with mine..and the strange thing was there were only two digits of a difference between it and my novas reg no is G244 TNF and i owned both at the same time lol

My APY 1.8T runs the bolt down coils, ive has 2 fail in 10 years and 95,000 miles

One job I would highly recommend is whipping off the sump and checking the oil pickup pipe, these can be prone to gunking up and also the dipstick plastic tube can degrade over time,

Turbo oil return pipes can get clogged too, ive seen a fair few 1.8T engines fail due to oil starvation on the audi forums,
