What Can I do???

I have a standard 1.2 nova Mk2. I also have little money! I need some things (aprt from air filter) that I can do to my car/engine to make it torquier and quicker. I need to be able to do it myself, cheaply and not have to declare it on insurance! Also, I want to keep good fuel economy. Any suggestions???!!!!!!

Any help would be very much appreciated.
