If your swoping the wheel over remove it while it's in the car then re fit it lose with the nut so you can pull the colum out

remove the colum cover and the wiper/indicator stalks

in plug the black plug off the ignition cap

pull the wire off fir the horn it's behind the wheel at the to

get a good hammer and cold chisel and on the Lh side should be a sheer nut you need to hit the chisel on the edge of this with a slight angle towards the passanger side to turn it and once it's moveing new dent and carry on till it's lose enough to turn by hand remove it then tackle the other 3 bolts

Iv got excessive play in the steering ... My steering locks stoped working and I have play left to right and up and down with the wheel ... ??

Quite dangerous when your driving ... Could it be anything else ?

Iv got a new rack to change out too .. Can I change the rack with the engine in place ?

Rack with engine in is Posable bit tricky though

colum is simple if you can use a ratchet you can take it off

I took one off this morning took 15 mins total

pinion bearing in the rack is well worth changing, and only a few quid. Should be plenty of threads on here (or look at the quickrack how to, same principle)

Cant see how changing the colum would eradicate play,

Bottom uj on the colum maybe but not the colum itself,

On the rack it could be the pinion as gary says or inner track rod ends or outer track rod ends,

Eliminate one thing at a time rather than blindly throwing parts at it.

Both control arm ball joints and outer tie rods changed .... Iv even changed out both top mounts and bearings and still having steering issues .. on test drive iv got steering wobble .. And my steering wheel has some play ?

could me steering issues be the CV joint ?

If its play in the column, you should be able to see it with your head down under the dash, wobble the wheel & look for the inner shaft to move independantly of the latticed outer. The column has a bearing at the top within the plastic holder of the stalks etc. Easy to change. I think theres just a nylon guide/bush at the base & then the UJ which could be at fault, again easy to diagnose.

If it's neither of the above then logically you have to look at the rack &/or rack ends.

If it has as much play as you describe, it should be easy to find with one person checking & another shaking the wheel.

is the rack actually loose??
worth a check. I do presume you mean you can turn the wheel before anything happens??? type of play, and not the small bush in the colum that mounts it to the bodywork? where buy you can push the wheel up down left right?
