im wanting to change the cambelt and pump on my 8v, and wondering if its possible to get the crank bolt un-done whilst the engines out the car, not attached to anything ?

i had my doubts, as ive always had to get a breaker bar on this bolt and give it some to get undone.
the force would almost deffo tip the engine over if sat in situe.

maybe possible to wedge a piece of wood against it to counter-act the force ?

Take the inspection plate off the clutch, remove the starter or gearbox to lock the crank.

thats what i usually do while its in the bay, but im gonna need to jump up and down on a breaker bar to get the bolt undone, and the engine will be doing barrel rolls most likely

i guess im gonna need a helper or 2 to hold the engine still

Just a good peice of wood behind the engine. Lock the flywheel and use a decent size breaker bar.

if your lucky the crank pully bolt isnt that tight on an 8v.

crankshaft pulley
m10 bolt with 23mm thread
55nm/40lbf ft

m10 bolt with 30mm thread (use new bolt)
stage 1 - 55nm/40lbf ft
stage 2 - 45-60 degree tighten

m12 bolt (use new bolt)
stage 1 - 95nm
stage 2 - tighten 30-45degrees
