View Full Version : braided brake line advice ..
after speaking to goodridge hoses and high spec it seems the ALL new braided brake lines for road/race cars now must have a clear plastic sleeve over them to stop dirt and grit getting into them(redesigned after they have been splitting)
the grit etc of the roads is causing the metal to break down and causing the pipes to split
ive found this first hand with myself, there is no such law i can find out or m.o.t point of view on the net, or any warning i can see... IMO if you have them, and they are old......
CHECK them very carefully , as i thinks its bloody dangerous!!
heres mine, with zero rubbing on anything..

im just thankful it went on a brake rollers under load and not on the road!

Thats good point for people who have, or are using home made type braided kits, my set had the plastic over coating.
I would imagine its more to do with any grit getting in the braid will cause abrasion to happen and slowly file through the liner.... Tbh its common sense and the hose suppliers would have been supplying for 'off highway' use which gets them out of all sorts of stuff and avoids the d word.

Looks like that's been touching something IMO
nope, not touching anything, always something i check after another close encounter i had many years ago after having the wrong length hose, and stuart , nail on the head, i, like most people would think they are a fit and forget item over standard rubber ones, but it seems not, wouldnt be no good on rally car etc either if the grit gets in, heres how they look now with the sleeve..

i've never been convinced that there is a massive improvement over standard oe spec flexi hoses.. I qualify this by also pointing out that I mean new oe spec ones, not something that has been on for 15-20 years... ok, I can see the point of lightweight braided ones on a competition vehicle where lightness & possible alternative routing is also a consideration, but exposed wire is always going to fail on a car used on the road because of the salt ingress.
But a (proper)rally car would have its lines stripped and inspected regularly....

Just heat shrink them before fitting.
I guess the main benefit is over old & perished OEM hoses + the fact a set of of the shelf braided hoses are probably cheaper than OE replacements ( & cooler on a MAX Power tech spec)
Custom hose from high spec made to your spec is £16 plus vat each so cheap really, and i would use standard hoses but they only fit standard brakes, everything aftermarket uses braided i think
