View Full Version : Rear disk conversion - HELP!

I'm planning on converting an axle to disk conversion for my nova rally car.
Main reason is that the handbrake cables stretch so much on events and by the end I end up with no handbrake especially when they are hot.
Am I right in thinking that I can Use MK4 Astra (4 stud) items? if not, what's my best option?

Also any conversion guides or tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Dion.

do you have a twin cylinder m/c setup or a decent bias valve?

what about a hydraulic fly-off handbrake setup? like the escorts had.

the works cars used the mk2 astra gte setup, which still has a poxy little cable operated handbrake inside the disc/drum.

you could look at something like mgf rear calipers, they still have a cable, but both foot & handbrake work the disc

The original one was mk2 Astra Gte cav Sri Gsi rears you cut the backing plate off and weld it to a nova beam after removing the plate from the nova one

not seen mk4 stuff done I did look at the one I had with hubs looked similar but not as simple

you can get just the plates but I don't know we're from though

Hi, cheers for the replies, Yep I do have a bias pedal box in the car and I am planning on fitting a hydraulic handbrake same time as I'm fitting disks. Handbrake (Even with cables fresh and adjusted well) seem to be on/off and not consistent, atleast with a disk I'd know it would be good everytime.

Also heard corsa C are a straight fit (no welding) I have a mk4 astra standing outside with disk rear beam so would be ideal if they did fit.

Corsa C only works if you flare the arches a little as in standard form they add a little track. You could skim the mating surface of the stub axle and a little off the disc face to correct it, but its still far from straight forward.

Handbrake cable is a nightmare, and unless relocating the lower shock mounts the cable fouls the coilover spring.

Mine worked well as I was conveniently turreting the rear, repairing the arches and getting the shell painted at the same time as doing the conversion.

On my rally car I've used mk2 astra rear hubs with saxo vts rear vts calipers and re driled discs works a treat

Dion, I went for the Golf mk4 caliper based conversion from Protec. Have a look at my build thread. I can't yet speak to how good it is but it was ok to fit once I got the caliper fitting brackets sorted. It's teamed up with hydraulic handbrake and bias pedal box

Dyou know roughly how much they've cost all in? I'm not looking to spend mega bucks on them if i'm honest but i've buggered both stubs and wheel bearings on the last rally and drums/shoes are due a change anyway so i thought it'd be the perfect time to disk it..

You can fit mk4 astra disc mteck sells the plates to convert them. Same as doing the mk2/3 discs

The Protec conversion kit is £420 +vat for discs, calipers, bearings, alloy brackets. You have to supply stub axles. To be honest now I've seen what others have done on here there are cheaper ways if going to discs.
