I was thinking of a quick job. - hitting it with some rust converter, and then a coat of stonechip.
would that be ok ? .. or will it be a half assed job that wont last ?

Prep prep prep all the way sloppy mc-grew
For the price of a new tank it's not worth the hassle IMO

Get a wire wheel on the grinder should get it back to clean metal in no time.

Make sure you drain it and vent it well for a few days before you wire brush it. Petrol vapours and stray sparks are not good.

that's with a wire twist grinder disk and if it's to much for the tank chances are it better to find out now instead of later
again for a new tank.
price up vs cost of knotted wheel, paints etc and time.
utterly false economy
