I'm just rebuilt my 1300 with new rings shells etc, and I've rehoned bores etc so just wondering what people suggest to do

6k hand brake up and lift off the clutch.

8 grand no limiter, drain the oil and water first, fill up with golden syrup, apply handbrake and smoke tyres untill they either blow or it blows up

take it steady till you are confident enough to give it some.....

On a few of my old rebuilds I use to give it about 200 miles with revving through the box gradually up to about 3-4k with running in oil then drain it, after that they were always okay to open up more and enjoy.

well iv done both ways.
205gti i drove like a fag and then gave it some.ran well.
my gsi grasser iv brayed from the first moment of start up and it absolutely loves having its cunnt revd off hahahaha

Don't you have trouble near the limiter though Andy.

i found today it IS my limiter lol
got talking to somebody who said some sound like that whereas others (like what iv had before) bounce off the limiter.

I read a lot on this after rebuilding my baby XE. Most things said take it easy and a few say give it some death. I tried to load it up a bit without too many revs then gradually build up. Apparently you need to get it loaded up so the rings push out against the cylinder walls and bed in before glazing over. Was revving near the limit within a few hours on the rollers. I started with only a base map on my ECU too so was a little worrying. 3000 miles and still going strong though.

My research said the same, foot down and overrun repeatedly up to 4000rpm, several hundred/a thousand miles of that then oil change and away you go

IMO crank the thing over by hand a few rotations then start it up & hold a fast idle for 15mins up to temperature.

Take it for a spin & don't got past 4 / 5K for 1st 1000 miles - change oil then drive it a bit harder progressively.

Drive it normally, plenty of engine braking to bed the rings in. You can have it 'run in' by a couple hours, this method suggests you gradually take the engine higher in the rev range for each set of repetitions. Doing reps of engine braking from 2.5k rpm down. About 5 x each repetition. Sounds like going to the gym LOL

....plenty of engine braking to bed the rings in.

This is about the worst thing you can do. High vac and poor cylinder filling = virtually zero dynamic compression so nothing there to thrust the rings into the bores to bed in and prevent glazing.

Best method is a combination of normal driving and 'snaps' of wide throttle/high load to make the rings work. Stay in high gears and give it some throttle up hills.

we just rev the cunnts off the things.
get on with it hahaha

that's actually the best way, first thing a car does on the production line is fire up and goes balls-out on the dyno for 30 seconds, it still does 100K +

After a controlled breakin at the engine plant lol

its more a function test than a break-in

I think most of gm's nova running in was done at avonmouth when unloading the ship..

yes and engine plants need to be watered every day or they will die.

they thrive in iron based soils.
