After looking for a decent SR for a while, I ended up winning this beauty on ebay just over a week ago and I went to pick it up from Loughborough today. Luckily I had viewed the car the week before the auction ended, so I knew how good it was and could bid with confidence. It is a really solid shell that has had no welding apart from new arches and a little patch on the sill. Robin has done an excellent job of the restoration on it, with loads of new parts having been fitted. I plan to do a few little jobs to it to get it just right and I hope to do some shows in it this summer.

The Swing had to go off into storage. It did about 130 miles to drop it off there and drove perfectly even though it had hardly moved for two years  It os being well looked after for a bit...

Looks stunning Richard, what are you plans for it?
Looking well, was watching it on e bay myself, but buying a restoredone blind is a hell of a risk so left it! Does look a cracker in the pictures though!
I got myself an 85 black SR a while back too, but it needs a lot of work!
wow rich, what a nice car m8! Can you show us more pics? Of the interior and engine bay. It's looks like a mint car to me!

You must be getting mixed up with the £3.5k white one in Derby. I went to view it and it was a dog. I offered £1500 quid and I am glad he said no lol

Not really. I was in the dog house for a while but I think she has forgiven me.

It was nice to see the rest of your collection when we collected the SR, you have some lovely cars. BTW, you make a good cuppa lol. If you are ever in Derby in the Camaro I would love a run out in it :)

So I have started a list of jobs I want to get done on it which includes...
New roof grab handle
Replace front seats with some better ones I have in stock
Replace the faded rear parcel shelf and side supports with uncut & unfaded ones.
Fit the new period SR standard fit Philips radio I have and wire it up to the dash mounted fader
Fit new set of headlight washers
Fit set of bronze opening rear quarter windows
Fit the later black door handle to the new door as the original does not fit.
Replace rear bumper with an early one
Restock the half empty tool kit
Fit my new three spokes
Maybe paint the engine bay
Possibly fit one of my spare Sport carb & airbox setups
Etc....
I had an issue with the throttle sticking which I sorted with a spare linkage I had.
Overall it is only a few small things it needs to make it a cracking little car :)

The weather was nice tonight so thought I would have a run out in the SR and drop in on a mate who wanted to have a drive. He took it out & loved it.
I have to say I am loving this car more & more and driving it is great. Although the ride height is sky high it is running poly bushes with 185/60 tyres and it handles quite well. Also it is running the single choke carb still but it actually goes quite well. An upgrade to a twin choke Weber or a set of DCOE's and it will go even better :)
A few pics from tonight...

Thanks for all the positive comments. Unfortunately I cannot take the credit for all the hard work that has been put into it so far.
Will drop it on Eibach Pro-Kit's or Sportline's at some point. If not I may go with GAZ coilovers.
Got the urge to put it back on steels, I have some 5.5jx13's in the original design with the centre caps.
Also thinking of rebadging it as an Opel Corsa, not sure yet.
Lowered yes.
Steels cool.
Opel badge not so much for me...

Thanks guys :).
As the weather was good today I decided I would spend a bit of time on the SR.
The dizzy had been rattling so I swapped it for another good used one I had. I then set the timing and found it had been way out, it now drives much nicer :).
I have also replaced the drivers door handle with the correct modified black handle for the later doors. I had a job getting the old one out as it did not fit correctly.
I Waxoyled the door cavity whilst the door car was off to protect the new door.
Also swapped the parcel shelf & side supports as the original was faded and had speakers fitted.
Just a few more little jobs to do so hopefully I can take it to PVS next weekend.
Sorry, this is the only pic I got as I was busy and my phone battery went flat.

Did changing the distributor remove the rattle?
Slack timing belts often cause the distributors to rattle on these engines.....:)
Novasport
01-06-14, 11:09 PM
Not really lol. Correcting the timing seemed to improve it slightly but it is still there. I will check the cambelt tension, I think it was replaced along with the water pump by the last owner. What is the best way to get the correct tension?
I could not find any play in either dizzy so you may be right.

I have a genuine GM gauge that I 'borrowed' when I left the dealership...
As a rule if I didn't have a gauge, I would say that you shouldn't be able to twist the belt more than 90 degrees at the mid point of it's longest travel...
Turn the engine a couple of full rotations by hand and check it again..
Don't over-tension a worn belt though....

Thanks guys. Just got a few little bits to do for PV.
The door membrane that the bodyshop had fitted was a bit like clingfilm so just fell apart as I tried to remove it when I replaced the door handle.
I remembered that we had a big roll of proper membrane plastic at work so I cut off a piece and brought it home. Got the pattern from an old split membrane I had in the garage so marked up the new plastic and got it cut. Not turned out too bad. Will get some sealer from work and stick it on this week so I can get the panel back on,

Well f**k me, you were correct. Removed the cambelt cover and found the belt was quite slack and could be twisted over 180 degrees!
It looked to be a new pump & belt so took a risk on the pump not leaking & tensioned it up correctly. Built it back up and hey presto, noise has gone!
Didn't get time to swap the seats over so just gave it a wash & wipe over. All ready for PVS.

The radio only has an output for 2x speakers which goes to the fader and splits it to 4x speakers. As the power output will be so low I will likely then wire it to this period amp as it has speaker inputs as well as DIN then onto the speakers with 25wx4

Gorgeous car, one of my fave Nova editions, the Black mk1 SR.
I only wish I had the funds to re-home it.

Bought some Caliber 2 way speakers and fitted them too. Only £15 BNIB delivered so hopefully they are OK. Bit of a tight fit on the drivers side though.

You can get a Din plug iPod lead I could plug directly into it too. Just need to put a small hole in the back of the glovebox to access it.
Cracking motor, take it you've had a change of heart about selling it ?

Everything will be for sale at the right price I think.
Nice little upgrades Rich, what else you got planned?

Finally finished wiring up the radio and amplifier today. A bit of head scratching to get it right though as the radio only has two outputs which go into the fader and splits to four but none of the outputs from the fader are identified! The four channel then goes into a 6 pin input on the amp which uses a shared earth.
Anyway, after a bit of fiddling it all works including the fader :).

Need to sort the rear spoiler then sort the seats. I have the headlight washers ready to fit then may do a bit of Opel rebranding, not sure yet.
As you say, everything is for sale at the right price ;). Well apart from the Sport :)

Took it to work on Saturday to replace the exhaust with a standard one. Whilst it was on the ramp I thought I would have a good look around underneath. Was quite surprised to find how clean and solid this is underneath :)

This thing has survived remarkably well for it's age. To think my first Nova (a B reg) was rotten to bits when I got it & that was back in 1997!

Yeah it don't rust. I just replaced a 3 year old system on my daily, only seems like last week I bought the stuff I was replacing, receipts were still in my glove box.
