Battery or alternator?

I took my car off the road around 2 years ago because I wasn't using it much, before I put it away I put a new battery in it. I used to go over regularly and start it up but it hasn't been started since last summer.

Anyway long story short I'm taking it back on the road so I charged the battery up stuck it in and it fired up right away but the battery light is showing on the dash and my volt metre gradually dropped until the car cut out. So I got the jump leads on it got it started up about 10 mins later the darn thing happened.

is my battery goosed or is my alternator? It said it was fully charged last night and the car ran perfect before putting it away.

any ideas?

When running there should be a 14v charge over the battery.

Would say you alternator is goosed!

Aw ffs time to try and source a 2nd hand one I think arsed paying £250 for a new one!

It will be either the bushes or regulator that will be dead, alot cheaper to just replace those.

Yes mate alternator and I know it's gona be a bit of a head scratcher but check the earths as with it standing there prob a bit corded with your salty winter roads but get the old one re furbed

Could be earths as said above. I had a Nova which had been lying for a while with the previous owner. The altenator light stayed on and it wasn't charging. The earth on the altenator was gone. What car is it for?

The battery light is on on the dash and my voltmeter was at like 12 volts and slowly went down until it said low then the car cut out. It's for my gt4

I would say altenator or earth definately not battery.

Checking the earths actually means prepping the metal work/contacts back to bright metal & tightening them, aswell as assuring any cables/wires are sound. I've known the exposed copper braided earths to pull apart in my hands.
