Cant fault my civic. Had it almost 4 years now & barely spent a penny.

personally I would buy a cheap as chips 8v corsa. but that's only because I could completely rebuild one with parts from local scrap yard there is always 10/15 plus of them in there

I'd be looking at an early mk1 focus, get a 1.8 petrol if your only doing short distances as they're not too bad on fuel, the diesel equivalents are more than 1k.

Also you can pick mk4 Astras up cheap enough, plenty of people on here will recommend them for the money :)

Mk4 Golf for me. You could get a good spec for 1k too.

Thing is parts will be more expensive and for under a grand they'll have naff all service history... Probably 180+ mileage as well.

Sounds like something my Mum would say. The truth is though that great cars are out there at great prices if you look in the right places (eg:- not Facebook & Gumtree)

I'd say a mk4 astra 1.8 sxi on a x plate to avoid stupid emissions tax band.

Can't fault MK4 astras, the z18xe seems pretty decent too

Where else can you look for cheap cars, folk won't pay to advertise them on the likes of pistonheads and auto trader

That's a common misconception. Most garages have Autotrader accounts and will put their trade in's on there for a bit before sending them to auction.

Just because it's not good enough for the pitch doesn't mean it's a bad car.

My vectra sxi is a car that goes on and on. Bought it four years ago, just get in and drive it no bother whatsoever. Be a shame to see it go tbh.

think this would be my first port of call also.

as for for mk4 golf if think you'd have to nearly double the budget to get a decent one of those with fair mileage and service history. I had one that had done 70k and when things went bits weren't the cheapest.

Bros just brought a Mk4 Astra 1.8 SRi taxed and tested for £400 and loves the thing, had it 3 weeks and cant help but rave about it which considering his pride and joy is his Ph1 172 means quite a lot, i think its a woeful barge though

I myself would get a 1.4 8v Corsa B, Auto if possible, Excellent daily comuter that costs stuff all tax and insure, goodish on fuel and cheap as chips on parts, you can change the cambelt in your lunch hour and they make novas seem a mission

and i honestly wouldnt have a diesel for a chep car, something like a turbo goes wrong, even if using used parts you wont get change from £150 on the cheapest of cars

Iirc Lewis already has a mk4 lol so not sure were helping..
As for vw's sutch as b5 and mk4 golfs, personal for experience I'd stay away..

I love my mk4 Astra, but at the moment im stuck on weather to sell it or not....

There is a good reason why most TDi MK4 Golf's and B5 / 5.5 Passat's have over 200k on the clock.

Cant say the same for many other cars.

Yeah the engines are solid and last well, just from personal experience everything els fell apart and was expensive to replace.

i have a s plate mk4 astra 1.6 8v, its done over 140k and i have enjoyed it, its just that its very tired.

mot is in sep and its had an advisory on slightly corroded brakes, engine has an oil leak and other bits and pieces, engine doesnt pull amazingly and fuel economy seems to be detiriorating. whats the view on the 1.8? mpg decent?

i did look at diesels but they all have done a million miles and as you say i really dont want turbo issues etc, hard enough to save for the nova at the mo ;o)

cheers for all the replies though.
