mot emission regs - old with newer engines

if I stuck a newer 1996 mpi engine in my 1989 carbed, what would the score be with the emissions test ?

does it get tested as the regular old spec, or will I get caught out on a post 92 test, and fail for not having a cat ?

It goes on which ever is oldest engine or car I believe

Goes by age, whichever is oldest.

When I put my nova in for a mot they done the pre cat test which is just a idle test n that's it and that was only in January
