i think that c/l was standard in gte's. the box under the glove box is the controller for the c/l. there was only one c/l motor and that is in the passenger door, the other is a switch. it works by switching the earth across two wires (one for lock and one for unlock). it sounds like when you are moving the wires the controller thinks that the switch is being operated, so the passenger door should lock or unlock. i would try another door motor and then check wiring from controller to passenger door. and i would check the wiring from controller to drivers door

central locking as standard on:

ALL

MK2 SR's SRI's GSI's Luxe and Luxe + models (there might be others....ste?)

MK1 optional on earlier SR's and GTE's

Came as standard on later mk1 sr's and GTE's

with regards to mk1 some do some dont.....

i know its of no help but that the leccy windows play up a lot just a case of tracing wires and seeing wots wot ;) :D
