C16xe with a powerbox fitted, tends to stall when pulling up to junctions etc, it only ever seems to do it when the cars up to temp and ossically once it dies it wont start its as if the battery is dead, if i jump it and get it going again i can turn it off and on straight away with no problems and it always starts first time round.

Any suggestions as what it could be? I heard it may not have a VSS, is there anything else i can be checking, I've had a look for the red/blue wire for the speed signal but I can only find one blue/red and that runs to a sensor plugged into the powerbox as below...... Any suggestions as it runs well other than this problem and I'm getting bored of breaking down!

what is this?

Thats your fuel vent valve it'll be piped into inlet and the part that has a bolt in used to go to the carbon canister fitted to the original car.
The red an blue wire you need for the vss will be close to the ecu. There will be a plug with a few wires, itll have a large blue red which is fuel pump and a thin blue red which is vss. You need to extend the wire as the original was part of another loom on the original car.whilst extending this its better to run a switch live with it for the vss aswell.

Thanks for the reply, Yeah I've found the thick red blue which goes to the fuel pump, the other end leads to a big purple block with a few wires thats by the ecu, Will the other red/blue be in there somewhere?

I can't remember of top of my head but if there is a thin blue red wire that isn't plugged into anything then that's the one you need.

these early engines don't run an immobiliser do they ?

so if it does have a vss connection, I guess it'll bypass that and go straight to the 9 pin ecu plug.

ive heard people say that some c16's need them, and some don't.

the later x16's with immobilisers deffo do.

he said it only stalls when upto temp.

wouldn't it stall all the time if it was the vss ?

samb12
25-03-14, 12:30 PM
Yeah that's what I'm not sure about the fact it doesn't always do it, it only does it once it's been running a while? It has a switch fitted that needs to be flicked on before it will start.. I'm going to look tonight to see if i can trace a wire for the SPeed sensor, but like Jimbob said if it was a vss would it not do it all the time?

I'd be looking at the egr valve (if it has one) as they only open when upto temperature.

Will it need wiring in? Or would a remove and clean help? Can you block them off?

Again in thanks for all the replys

even if its blanked off underneath with a plate, it needs to be plugged in to stop the eml flashing up.

there should be a 5 pin connector plug for it kicking about in the local vicinity, that branches off the ecu loom.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure the C16xe doesn't have a EGR valve.

Ok had a quick look found no plug loose anywhere, the ecu wiring is a bit of a mess, if i take it off clean it all up will this stop it stalling or is it because it isn't plugged in it stalls?

Southie

You'll need a VSS, mine used to do it constantly once I was sat in traffic.
The wiring used on mine was a separate set of wires which I connected to my dash, the blue/red wires were connected to the speed sensor and then a black wire also connected to the VSS.

Heres a picture of my old spi AA transducer.

Southie did yours stall all the time? Mine only does it when it's up to temp seems fine even at lights/traffic etc when cold? If it was the vss would it not do it all the time?
I've been looking apparently some very early c16xes had the egr and apparently not all needed a vss, ha I can not find definite answers it seems to change all over the Internet!

the egr I'm guessing I can just unbolt it clean it up and bolt it on, don't suppose it will do any harm to try it, I've sourced a VSS like above which I'm tempted to just buy but I can not for the life of me find the thin red/blue wire from the loom.

might just have to take it to a garage and see what they come up with as its starting to bug me! It's a good job it's awesome.

Again thanks for the replies and sorry for the 100's of questions!

Mine seemed to stall more once warmer tbh.
Yours is a C16xe for the AFM and the head, obviously the wiring must also be as well.
My concerns though are that someones put a X16xe bottom end on, that would explain the EGR tbh.

For the extra wiring that connects to the VSS then take your clocks out and see if there's a separate connector that's the same coloured wires on as the picture I posted of the VSS.

Ah right ok, I'll get the speed sensor iof the chap off here and I'll take clocks out tomorrow and have a look for the connector, is it easy to wire in? Can it be done behind the dash? Or where does it have to screw into?

The speed sensor connects to your speedo cable, the wires attach to a separate part of the original loom, it should be a small black connector that's only a few wires that gets your dash and vss running.

i wish I'd taken pictures six years ago to help more lol

Ignore the imobiliser part of this diagram but the rest will be of help.

Sam put some pics up of the wires plugs etc
the vss Wire will not need to go to the clocks just to ecu so you feed it with black (ignition live) earth (brown wire some do not have this and connect thin blue red (vss signal wire ) to the blue red in the 9pin plug near to your ecu

you only need vss wire at the clocks if ure running digi dash

samb12
25-03-14, 11:30 PM
Yeah ok mate I'll try get some pictures up tomorrow after work from memory the ecu has a blue and a red plug that connect directly in, there is then a purple connector that has 5/6 cables in it a red/blue cable that i traced which goes to the fuel pump. I'll see what I can see tomorrow, do i need to be taking the clocks out or is there no point?

dgbnova#1
25-03-14, 11:56 PM
As I said what part of your speedo is electric if your running digi clocks you would have a vss already

get photos of gearbox speedo all plugs around the ecu area and the cables on the other side of the ecu should be a plug with wires 9 comeing out Of it

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm sure the C16xe doesn't have a EGR valve.

^ oh yeah, your right southie, the C16's don't.

I wonder if that's an x16xe/xel inlet manifold.

it wouldn't effect anything in that case would it ? .. as being bolted there will effectively be the same as a blank plate, and not effect the C16's ecu ?

Do we think the egr valve will not be doing anything as it is? I'm going to have a tinker on saturday, is it worth taking it off for the sake of 2 bolts and clean it? I'll also check all pipes and seals as apparently an air leak could cause it to stall?

I havent had had chance to look behind my clocks yet but they are the standard mk1 clocks that show speed, temp and fuel only :) as below

The wire will be in the same bunch that the rev counter is connected to. Check another few inches up the loom and it should be there.

It's not behind ure clocks it's in the Corsa loom so removing the clocks are a waste of time plus u ain't running a rev counter so that's no help

look at the loom from the ecu back there is a plug with 9 wires it's Possably taped up looking st the pics this is what you need to find it will have
green (rev counter)
blue/ brown
brown yellow
thin red blue (vss)
Few others forget of the top

There is Possably that the plug has been cut off so you need to start looking for wires that are not concerted up or ones that have been joined around 6 inches back from the ecu

sam - that purple blocks the fuel pump relay :thumb:

an air leak is a possibility... if its running lean, then when its up to temp and the choke switches off, would cause it to run even leaner and could cause possible stalls.

if you have a can of carb cleaner, you can spray around areas where gaskets meet, to see if engine tone changes, and maybe visually spot it at the same time

jimbob-mcgrew
26-03-14, 11:12 PM
un-wrap that big tangle of tape next to ecu, see if anythings leftover underneath.

I see a brown/blue there on its own with a spade connector crimped on - that might be the eml light wire. if it is, can be connected to the dash (the choke light bulb if you like) so you can run diagnostic tests and what not.

theres probably 1 or 2 more un-attached kicking around in there somewhere lol

I have a speed sensor :) aa one as pictured earlier on, my last questions ha

once i find the speed wire, what does the actuall sensor screw into? Is it my clocks or is it the gearbox? I'm assuming my speedo is driven by a cable?

the speed sensor goes into the gearbox and then your speedo cable goes onto the top of it

the speed sensors have 3 wires :

brown - earth to body
black - 12v switched live
red/blue - to ecu, thin red/blue speed sensor wire (if you can find one that is) .... if you cant... I guess you have one of the ecu's that doesnt need it ?

Think I have sorted it! Un tangled some loom in the engine bay didn't find a 9 pin plug or any loose cables, i did find a 3 pin plug with brown black and blue/red cable. Fitted my speed sensor wired it into the cables above been out for an hour or so and I cannot make it stall. Searching online the 3 pin round plug does pop up when i search for vss images.

Will give it another test tomorrow! But think its sorted :)

thanks for the help/pics been a big help.
