View Full Version : Hairdresser toy MR2 Roadster turbo
Cut and paste from another forum but thought it might interest some people. Only the third attempted engine swap of this kind I know of in the uk.
Decided to have a change from my mk1 turbo as fancied something a little newer, never liked the mk2 so went straight on to a mk3.

The only criteria for the Roadster was it had to be black.

Complete with ditch finder tyres as most of them are and in need of a good polish. Love the handling and driving position but not the power.
Had the standard wheels powder coated and fitted new Toyo's. Fitted a chassis brace and also TTE lowering springs. Also fitted a TRD replica bodykit to make it look a bit more aggressive but still quite subtle.
http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z163/Lee_H25/null_zps5875053b.jpg
Then I cut down the plates slightly and fitted a hardtop.

Then I bought these mounts off a guy in the states to fit a 3SGTE (2.0 turbo) into a mk3.
http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z163/Lee_H25/D9D12176-1D46-4EEB-8AC6-88D544DB35DD-406-00000056F00BDCE0_zpsb601ca6c.jpg
Bottled it as not much info out there on the swap and bought this 2ZZ. Also didn't want the car off the road as I love driving it.
http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z163/Lee_H25/A09B8899-C295-429A-A602-5BA84DCB574A-406-000000579643ABAD_zps1c02648a.jpg
Decided I didn't want this either as 190bhp wouldn't cut it so went for my original plan.

Also bought an updated radiator.

And fitted along with the chargecooler rad.

Trying to do as many of the small jobs as possible to minimise the time the car is off the road although I expect to be without it for a few months at some point.
Wheels fitted.
http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z163/Lee_H25/A8A5CA83-CA98-49C1-8DA6-353CD63648C4-103-000000091211F463_zps9ab14c06.jpg

Noticed with the hardtop off I still have a lot of chassis flex despite the chassis brace so I collected facelift front braces and fitted them.
http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z163/Lee_H25/075D4E68-F1CC-4512-82E1-0C04D78046C7-2516-0000043A10015C74_zpsf0aed382.jpg
Not holding out much hope of it making a difference but was easy swap and cheap.
Engine out. Really easy do to the whole rear of the car being so open.

Cleaned the bay. Not that you can tell as Toyota decided to put so little paint in here.

Also removed the air intake tube from the passenger side 1/4 as its no longer needed.
Found some shifter bearings from my mk1 and they fitted the mk3.

Fuel pump fitted using the evap line as the fuel return so needed gutting inside the pump assembly and drilling out to 6mm so the fuel can flow through.
http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z163/Lee_H25/6123DD91-5103-4D58-AE2B-FE48D85E9FEE-4938-000005A80A4FC30B_zps77d20869.jpg
Now have feed and return lines. Just need to T the evap line into the filler breather pipe as not sure of the consequences of not having it?
http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z163/Lee_H25/9848E3C4-664C-41BA-9F89-EC62BE44B9E9-4938-000005A8125BA1C3_zpsf5cafcef.jpg
It's in. Clearance is tight everywhere. Had to hack the rear cross brace thing up and planning to move the engine cover catch and bar back as inlet it tight against it.
Better be worth it.

Also bought this to get around in, some nice parts on it for my car. Epic **** spoiler sold for £200.

So it's now got the turbo lump from the white one? Very cool. Much better way of doing it.
Liking the rims on the breaker too....
Yes, about 300bhp and should be just over a tonne all done. Should make it quicker than the white one as its lighter.
Few people have said they like the wheels, not my thing at all and wrong offset so they rub. Prefer my bronze wheels.

Had to do some cutting unfortunately, need to cut a touch more out. Takes me back to my xe conversions and the alternator clearance.

Hard to say at the moment as 140bhp doesn't unsettle much to be honest. Chassis doesn't feel great to me with the roof off but the hardtop totally changes it. Most people think these are the best handling MR2 however I've probably ruined that with the equivalent of a big block conversion now.

pretty cool mate - nice project. will go like stink @ 300 per tonne :thumb:

Great job. Love the look of the kit, hardtop and wheels!
Looking good MR-S H :)
I like a good mk3, too. They are so cheap that you can't ignore them!
Has to be silver or black, though and with lip kit, hard top etc to man them up!
You are Woodsport and I claim my five pounds
Got quite a bit done today.
Heatshielding. Hope its enough.

Mk2's just seem a lot bigger and heavier and totally different to the Mk1 and 3. Can't put my finger on what I don't like really.
Been watching this swap on facebook, what engine is in it now Lee? And what was it out of originally?
2.0 16v turbo out of rev 3 MR2 mk2.
Decided a few hours was plenty on the car today.
Painted crossmember and pumped loads of rust preventer into it.

Pretty much finished, just exhaust to connect up now. Need a new pipe making.

So Lee will this being going down York Dragstrip this year?
It will if I can ever get someone to connect my exhaust up. Been let down twice this week so going to have to look elsewhere. Only problem is it needs trailering/recovering to wherever it goes.
Pretty gutted with it at the moment as it seems to have stalled at this stage for weeks now.

Its a Blitz Nur spec. Hoping with the size of the silencers it might be quite quiet.

You'll be able to get to those hair appointments uber quick now!
I used to have a blitz nur spec system on my impreza turbo years ago. Friends and family heard me coming for miles!! Will sound cracking I'm sure as well as surprise a few with its motor!

If you're worried about noise Lee I have a nur spec r baffle if you want it.
Is it a common conversion? Are the mounts, shafts etc available?

Isn't there a exhaust company near by like power flow that could help you out?

Mine was never that loud on my GT4, think Imprezas are pretty noisy anyway though. Don't want my ears bleeding like they do in the Civic.

Cheers but it won't fit this exhaust as its a Nur Spec S and doesn't have a backbox as such, just a tailpipe.
Is it a common conversion? Are the mounts, shafts etc available?
Third one I'm aware of in the UK. Paid £800 for the mounts from a guy in the USA, MR2 mk2 turbo shafts with GT4 outer cv's fit straight in. Most difficult engine swap I've ever done by far.

Problem was getting the car there. Had it bodged up now to get it running, not been able to do anything since though due to the weather.
Ground clearance is a bit of an issue, already caught it just being towed home.
