Anyone done it? Good idea or not?

Going to look at a barn find but they've lost the v5.

Well if its a barn find then I wouldn't be too concerned just use that the fact it will cost you £25 for a logbook as a bargaining tool, and if your concerned about it you can always do a hpi check on the car

Buying any car v5 or not is a gamble it's a 25£ fee to apply for a v5 but you need one to scrap it or sell on.
all good for haggling the price though it's never ever bothered me in the 100s of cars I've owned think had problems with only one car ended up stolen and had to pay pittance to the insurance that owned it, think it was £75 to keep it so I suppose it's up to yourself and the car really

most likely not a barn find at all... beware, unless its something ancient or amazing, then definitely get it checked out

I'm pretty sure it is, although 'barn find' is used to sell any old car nowadays. I did a vehicle enquiry and it hasn't been taxed since 2001 and he said its been off the road stored away for about 14 years.

If you apply for the v5 what happens? Doesn't the previous registered keeper get a letter? Or do they just issue it straight away?

They get a letter to respond to or ignore if they ignore it dvla or whoever it is will issue the v5 to you

Can you not blag that the log book was lost in the post when you sent it off to them for change of keeper and get a new one for free? Worth a try

There is no box to tick for scrapping a car on newer v5's

This ^

A lost V5 is the easiest way for some one to sell a ringer if the buyer takes the bait. If its an old Escort DEFINETLY get it checked out, Id say a good 30% of them are ringers now with the amount that get stolen.

The new style V5's got sent automatically when they updated, which means no reason for a misplacement,as a new one would have been issued.

We always draw two big lines through the whole page and write scrapped across it. Then the dvla send us the usual acknowledgement letter saying we arent the keeper anymore

This is a really good point! After all them blank V5s were stolen from the DVLA they re-issued every single logbook in the UK (seriously, google it!) I got resent a logbook in my name for a car I sold in 2011 about 2 weeks after I sold it because of this lol

Bit of a strange one, did 'my text check' and typed the reg into gocompare for a quote and they both came back as no dvla record found.

But freecarcheck.org and the dvla vehicle enquiry both found it and the engine size, colour, year of registration and they both show it as been off the road since 2001 which check out with what the seller said.
