Surface processing or central blast cleaning the latter I've heard is much better though! That said though if the base is really good I wouldn't bother just repair what it needs and it will last anyhow!

I disagree rust always starts on the inside - treating it now will increase it's life dramatically

It's not cheap, pals just had his evo 6 done for 2.5k! Depends how far you're going with the project and what state the shell is in, got any pics?

I had a new shell and had it acid dipped, wish I had never bothered. Steer well clear of acid dipping, just use a good cavity wax like Dinitrol

What put you off the acid dipping?

The fact it went to them undamaged with no corrosion on it and came back damaged and with corrosion!

Thanks for the replies, I will have a good think about it, it does have the odd scab here and there but the major nova rot spots are like new.....
I will start a project build as soon as i get started....cheers leigh:thumb:

No I wouldn't have been too happy either, can I ask what company you used as I have this planned for a couple of projects I have , but I have seen good results on other cars, depends who you use I suppose

Would it be possible for you to elaborate on this - Do you have any supporting pictures.
Not doubting you in any way just would like to see the effects that the dip had on said areas. When you say new shell - Do you mean "new" new or very fresh used shell.

I have seen the pictures of the shell in a build thread so I am not doubting that it was a minter.

Just very interested in this discussion as I have always wanted to get a shell dipped and have a clean base to start with.

My 6rs shell was done. But speaking too a few ppl avoid spl. Acid never gets completely out of the joints. Lad I know had a splitty and a mk2 escort done. Painted them and for years the acid kept weeping through. I know theres a newer company a mates had his 8 done by. I may get too redo my shell when I get time too carry on with it.

Im looking into doing soda blasting. Mainly heads, rocker covers, oil pumps etc for the engines I build. But have been asked about doing full shells so may be an idea if can find someone too soda blast. Only thing is, its not heavy enough too get really bad rust/corrosion off.

Christ! Went back, logged in to JOV for the first time in a few years, looked back 9pages to find your thread and had a read.
Was a lot of dents in the shell and panels went it came back wasn't there.

The main corrosion was inside the roof skin. I did not spot it initially as the dip primer covered it up.
I had to clean it all back to bare metal, treat it and paint. It was the whole roof skin, not just a small patch.
Also I forgot to take the rear seat strikers off before dipping. When I took them off after there was corrosion behind them which again I had to clean off and treat.
When I went to collect it the first time there was brown water stains coming out of the seams even though it should have been thoroughly dried in the oven before they etch primed it. I was not happy with this so had them redip it then dip prime it on their recommendation as that supposedly would get into the seams.
When I collected it the second time they had manage to completely collapse the slam panel somehow. I suspect they hit it with the forks of a forklift truck. They said they had not noticed and didnt know how it was done, yeah right!.
I had so many lies from them.
Also I noticed on ABZNovasport's project thread that after he had his shell dipped, when he split the seams to remove metal there was corrosion present. Slightly worrying!

Yes the shell was bought new in the nineties from Vauxhall to reshell a GTE. It was painted and partially built but not used.
I had no floor number stamped in it.

It seems to be holding up pretty well atm tho

I hope it does. I pumped 5-6 litres of Dinitrol into it so it should be good.
I am glad I got it redipped as I dont think it would have lasted this long from the first dip and etch.
My main point is I should not have had to do all this remedial work after a process which costs so much but is obviously flawed.

Thanks for the details rich

Your not the first case I have heard of - slam panel was just annoying as there is no reason what so ever for this bar negligence.

If it was a rare porsche or ford shell I bet they would have been a little more careful.

Amazing that you had a non stamped shell - Would love to see the pictures throughout the process.
