nova failed mot today mainly on emissions, anyone know the best way to get them down to acceptable levels ?

Would help if you stated engine type, presume it has a cat i.e. later car?

If so, could be a lambda sensor possibly, has the car been serviced recently, had a good run out to clear the system?

sorry , yeah its a K plate 1.2i with a cat, car has not been on the road for 3 years now

Well full service is number 1 plugs oil and air filter oil carb cleaner the carb prob that would be enough to drop it down maybe dizzy cap and rotter arm and leads

no probs, its just had oil/air filter/ plugs

Check the ignition timing with a timing light possibly

It's a 1.2i so no carb to adjust and dizzy timing shouldn't be adjustable?

If it is the same dizzy as carb then it is adjustable it's only a single point injection

spi nova dizzys are adjustable..
it will have a lambda sensor, make sure it is clean & working.
also check for air leaks round the throttle body, injector, and all the random pipes on it.
maybe get a new CTS, (a coolant temperature sensor), they are cheap and usually don't last that long

remember to give it an almighty blast (HAHAHAHA), well, as almighty as a 1.2i will go to get it warmed up & blow any crap out of the chimney..

tested the O2 sensor and its doing nothing http://www.rodsnsods.co.uk/forum/images/rns/smilies/icon_smile.gif

going to maplin for a digital thermometer then test the cat

how did you test the lambda sensor?

how are you going to prove the cat' ?

where is your distributor sitting in relation to the marks on the cam carrier?

take the o2 sensor out and put it in the vice with the neg probe from my volt meter clamped on the body, the positive probe on the black wire

heat the end with the blow torch and it should read up to 1volt if working ok, mine was giving no volts atall

the temp of the exhaust going into the cat should be much colder than the temp coming out, think i had about 230 going in and only 180 coming out

Well thats the lambda probe ****ed!!!

Given how rich its running, its either ignition timing, OR (more believably) a crack in the exhaust pre sensor.

will get a pic of the distributer markings shortly

how about, taking it to the MOT station and asking very nicely if you can just tweak the dizzy while on the machine.... If that doesnt fix it then you need to look for leaks in the exhaust.

I had a car fail on emissions that had been stood and the was a build up of condensation in the exhaust, so it had water sat in it.

PASSED lol one thing i did notice is that i cuts out now and then, not sure if its low on fuel or what

what did you do to solve the problem?

tarmacghost

new O2 sensor and cat

good work, what was the emissions readings on the successful test?

thanks for posting, that is a useful benchmark for someone the next time with a similar problem.
