£80 mate, has to be cash though as daves retired now so it doesn't go through the tax man lol and he'll stay under the bonnet as long as he needs to for that.

Pretty sure the tax man won't be on png and if their asking people to pay cash it's not like a well kept secret

Amazing thread. Love seeing a car being built from day one to today. The work is great. Well done having a go at the welding. It's too easy to let others do it and it's your toy. So why not.
Loving the sound of the carbs. Can't wait to get mine done now.

Cheers lads! Think the most I'd done on a car before I got this was changing discs and pads and the odd oil change, etc. best just to get stuck in. Can't wait to get some more work done on it.

Had a little time on the car this morning, mainly spent it doing little ends and ends as there's loads of little bits need sorting and adjusting. I did manage to swap the brake servo for the bigger gsi one I painted though and also swap out the wiper linkage for a citreon zx one.

One gsi servo, needs a good clean in the bay. That's waxoil around the turret.

..and how the bay is looking.

couple of bits to do before total retro next week, also need to fit the scuttle cover. Then before billing I'm aiming to rebuild the top end, rose joint the gear linkage and maybe do a tuck on the wiring loom. Might leave the loom while winter though.

Hi mate,

Very inspirational project, I'm loving the car! Great job. I noticed you changed the exhaust over, do you have the original system that was on the car for sale? I have a 2.0 16v project ongoing and a ready made exhaust would save me some hassle.

Thanks,

Paul.

Been busy today, bit tired to write loads but will leave the pictures...sure it will be obvious what's going on.

had it running, just waiting on a new coolant stub for the head so I can put the water back in and run it properly.

also need to fine tune the gear linage as I have to choose between 5th and reverse at the minute.

Good job Scott, what was the reason for the head change or have I missed that one?

the other needed followers and valve stem seals and I bought an xe really cheap with the cams, arp's, water bar and other goodies on it so I sold what I didn't need and kept the bare engine. Then I just got a good head fully re done so I could swap it in the weekend and it leaves me with a spare.

Not much been going down here as Im not available for Pvs so have bags of time until billing.
had the car running briefly but still need to repair the water pipe coming out the head before I can fill it with fluid (see post in mechanical) think I'm going to sort that tomorrow though.
ive also fitted a head unit and some upgrade speakers in the standard positions.
and finally after failing with so many types of dye I've got my grey parcel shelf to go black

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/scottcooper85/top%20end%20rebuild/15B7EC11-B989-4DC4-9404-3BD935E580EF_zpsv9ouax5j.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/scottcooper85/media/top%20end%20rebuild/15B7EC11-B989-4DC4-9404-3BD935E580EF_zpsv9ouax5j.jpg.html)

the new lifters are really tappy so think it needs a good run, which I'll hopefully get done Wednesday. Also
compression tested the cylinders today and got a happy 180psi from all 4.

collect new wheels on Wednesday too :)

Thought I'd do a quick update.

Did is loads of little bits and bobs and test runs to get it ready for billing, I loaded it up on the Friday morning and set off steady away. After around a mile the engine gave up and felt solid. I haven't removed it yet but the timing is still bang on so hoping the head is okay. I think it's oil pump failure and seized Pistons which is annoying as I planned to rebuild the bottom end during winter.

anyway every cloud has a lining and all that. I've sold my carbs, ignition, cams, Bailey catch tank and some other stuff and next Saturday im going to see a decent spec c20let with forged internals, etc. so will update with pictures when something happens lol

Scottcooper85
25-07-15, 04:12 PM
bit of an update so it doesn't all want doing together later

before billing I wasn't happy with the paint on my softstars and they were slightly buckled in places. So I went and picked these mint ones up which were removed from Craig atkinsons black nova which is now rocking chrome speedlines

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/scottcooper85/engine%20change%2015/0D655EDE-B80C-456B-9BCA-FE56C250E61A_zpsqm62rkk4.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/scottcooper85/media/engine%20change%2015/0D655EDE-B80C-456B-9BCA-FE56C250E61A_zpsqm62rkk4.jpg.html)

Then took them to get powder coated

i didn't get chance to get any pictures of them out and about on the car as I planned to at billing but as above it wrecked the bottom end coming out of town. It's looking like the culprit was the shell on number 4 deciding it didn't want to play any more.

got back and went straight to work stripping the motor out and then down.

then I went about selling all the engine parts, which sold pretty quick which was nice.

so this morning I went and picked up the new lump which was until a change of plans destined for d20tbo

a quick spec of what I know about it until I get forwarded all the paper work as I forgot to pick it up lol

c20let
forged Pistons and rods
bronze valve guides
double valve springs
xe inlet cam with Kent pulley
hybrid t3 turbo on a 200sx manifold with external wastegate and screamer pipe
full 3" turbo back exhaust system
HD ecu with eds phase 2 chips
aem wideband kit
Vxr injectors

think that's the top and bottom of it for now. It wants a good clean and the rocker cover on it was just for transport.

next step is to prep the engine bay for painting.

Disappointing to read about your engine failure Scott, but I must say I really do approve of your replacement! If it breaks build it back bigger and stronger and all that I guess. Best of luck with the new build and keep us updated

Cheers lads, I was a bit gutted when it went as after billing it was getting the bottom end fully done. But after we chucked all the gear in my mates golf, got there and drank a few cases of lager everything felt alright lol

never had anything to do with turbos so now I have the big head ache of earning about boost and vacuum pipes :)

Iain
27-07-15, 09:13 AM
Do you think the bottom end failure was something you did with the head? Weird how it happened so quick after that but not under mega load/RPM?

Turbo lump should be good though so always nice when you can sell bits to cover some costs.

Scottcooper85
27-07-15, 09:43 AM
No the head is still mint, timing was still bang on etc. we opened her up on Saturday and found out the shell on number 4 had span and welded itself to the crank lol I think the oil pump was on its last legs though as the new lifters were as noisy as the old ones. It's just a shame it didn't hold out until rebuild in September

Bit more done... I changed phones last week and lost the photos between my last update and then. Basically prepping and welding in the bay, paint, fit solid rack mounts and fitting the bulk head deadening. Here's what I've been up to since last Tuesday... Got the motor back from my dads and painted the block in black hammerite http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/scottcooper85/let%20conversion/C33D68D0-76E1-4325-8CDA-3668A7DEE3A2_zpsceiyo9cq.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/scottcooper85/media/let%20conversion/C33D68D0-76E1-4325-8CDA-3668A7DEE3A2_zpsceiyo9cq.jpg.html) Had the sump off to check what had been done. New big ends, arp bolts, steel h beam rods and machined Pistons. http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/scottcooper85/let%20conversion/067110C4-0FBF-4160-A054-EA369BF3B00F_zpszowwxwwy.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/scottcooper85/media/let%20conversion/067110C4-0FBF-4160-A054-EA369BF3B00F_zpszowwxwwy.jpg.html) Then re did timing belt so I knew it was bang on and retarded inlet pulley 7'. Then fitted a timing cover I'd cut holes in. http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/scottcooper85/let%20conversion/71F4AE1E-3566-4D84-B999-3F6604163177_zps6oeqsuki.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/scottcooper85/media/let%20conversion/71F4AE1E-3566-4D84-B999-3F6604163177_zps6oeqsuki.jpg.html) http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/scottcooper85/let%20conversion/56ECB955-E972-4848-AEC1-EC9E54896806_zpsfverp90c.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/scottcooper85/media/let%20conversion/56ECB955-E972-4848-AEC1-EC9E54896806_zpsfverp90c.jpg.html) How it looked prior to engine install http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/scottcooper85/let%20conversion/0A16CED8-7830-489A-ACF6-5E69668744B1_zps5k3fksqe.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/scottcooper85/media/let%20conversion/0A16CED8-7830-489A-ACF6-5E69668744B1_zps5k3fksqe.jpg.html) Got the exhaust put on, which was a pain as its 3" and all one piece and I only had it on 2 axle stands http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/scottcooper85/let%20conversion/4337E428-AD15-478B-BEA2-D55A66BBBE0F_zpseedltfkb.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/scottcooper85/media/let%20conversion/4337E428-AD15-478B-BEA2-D55A66BBBE0F_zpseedltfkb.jpg.html) Then I finally got it back down on its wheels http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/scottcooper85/let%20conversion/19F83206-6C16-439C-A1F6-0E4B22558CE3_zpstz6vfw5a.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/scottcooper85/media/let%20conversion/19F83206-6C16-439C-A1F6-0E4B22558CE3_zpstz6vfw5a.jpg.html) And then engine in... Also ran an oil pressure pipe to gauge, plumbed in lambda and ran a secondary lambda to the AEM wideband on the dash. Oh lordy, another C20XE horror story, albeit with a suspicion the oil pump was a bit iffy, I assume a nice accurate oil pressure gauge is on order?

Still I applaud your optimistic attitude, and the new motor looks very promising, presumably it won't be to 'off the wall' power wise, what you expecting from the setup, somewhere north of 250hp with a nice big fat torque curve?

I'm a tad worried by your modification to the front cross-member, looks to be well weakened with that chunk taken out of it, hopefully you are planning to plate it over to regain some rigidity?
Also surprised there are no obvious reinforcing plates, surely these would be advisable even with a standard xe in place let alone a turbo unit?

Sorry to appear to be a bit of a killjoy, but I wouldn't like to see the car destroy itself after all the hard work you've put into it..

the bottom end and oil pump were going to be my winter job lol I think it's safe to say oil pump failure was prime culprit especially with it being the furthest shell from the pump which got fried.

the previous owner had the motor up past 300hp but I'm going to run low boost to start with and go from there. I've just sent the turbo off for rebuild with fully upgraded internals so it will be up to the job.

like most that cut the cross member to hide to intercooler I'll be welding in some angle iron (50x50 and 6mm thick) which will be much stronger than the flimsy stock metal and the full front (and soon rear) of the car has been seam welded on both sides of the metal where possible. I don't really see the point in running the plate kits on road only cars, I'd consider it if I was doing rally's or heavy track abuse but for what I'll be doing the shell will be more than adequate.

cheers Scott :)

I've done a little more over the past 2 weeks, but only really had a couple of spare half days to have a crack at it. Main reason being we've been having work done on the house so the nova got demoted to the garden.

Got a couple of cheeky photos while the sun was out...

also threaded the loom through the bulk head and wired it in under the dash and fitted and wired the wideband, oil pressure gauge and boost gauge. Didn't take pics of the gauges though.

then went to work fitted bits to the rear of the engine. Inlet, regal top hat, all vac pipes, lives, Earth, loom, etc

still plenty of tidying up to do but going to get it something like and running before I go too far.

then started the cooler cut out and as it was getting late I very roughly lol skimmed it with filler so I'd have something solid to work with when I get chance to rub it back and stone chip it over the weekend.

Going to aim to get it stone chipped and painted before I go away and that will be it before the end of September. Also going to drop the intercooler of with the fabricator to have the pipes cut back and re welded facing the engine.

cheers Scott.

Think this is my 3rd time reading your thread Scott I absolulty love it.. It's an amazement to me all the work you have put in whilst having two kids and a missus, great work man..

Just a quick question. Is there a benefit to heat wrapping a manifold? Not to sure whether to go down that route myself to mine which is on a e16se probably a waste of time..

Thanks benn, it's a lot easier when I have threads like yours to refer to. Will be copying how your cooler has be re-welded on the pipes lol

Cheers :) sometimes it's hard to find time as I work long hours too, the best way is to have a day set out to do it and stick to it lol

It does keep the heat in the pipes and off the motor but going back again I'm not sure I'd bother as everytime you touch it you itch for about 3 days lol I've removed all the heat wrap that came on the 3" system for the turbo engine as it was well worn.

I got the intercooler bolted up then with some nice tight mikolor clamps....

after this I also fitted the oil cooler and put the engine oil in, I also fitted the front bumper loosely and trimmed it here and there to suit the cooler.
also think I'm going to have to trim the grille a little to accept the fans.

thats about it at the minute, just loads of bits and bobs to finish now.

Bit more done on Sunday, I've been really busy though so struggling to find time to do stuff.

A couple of days before Sunday I managed to get my fuel lines hooked up to the rail and the fpr on too, but didn't have any m4 bolts to mount it so that still needs doing.
had the car running too but only for a very short time as it doesn't have coolant in and is getting 4bar of fuel haha, but I wanted to fire some oil around the engine.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/scottcooper85/engine%20change%2015/5322FBCE-4D67-4496-957E-AA45F366FCB6_zpsccwdafhz.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/scottcooper85/media/engine%20change%2015/5322FBCE-4D67-4496-957E-AA45F366FCB6_zpsccwdafhz.jpg.html)

Also got my oil cooler mounted too, I'm going to run it behind the front panel for now due to space issues and see how it goes.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/scottcooper85/engine%20change%2015/3656F05B-C164-4FF1-83A0-3A4D5F865D24_zpss8j5l27h.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/scottcooper85/media/engine%20change%2015/3656F05B-C164-4FF1-83A0-3A4D5F865D24_zpss8j5l27h.jpg.html)

Next it was the boost controller on so it allowed me to fit the radiator and bumper

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/scottcooper85/engine%20change%2015/090769DB-9B3F-462D-B912-002CBBD72D2D_zps1npmxyky.jpg (http://s39.photobucket.com/user/scottcooper85/media/engine%20change%2015/090769DB-9B3F-462D-B912-002CBBD72D2D_zps1npmxyky.jpg.html)

Radiator went on next. I'm having some issues getting the coolant pipe to fit though. It's hard to size it up by the photos but since moving the radiator over to allow for the intercooler pipe work the top hose exits the radiator close to the light surround and has to make a tight turn back to the thermostat. Also as I'm running a t3 the afm pipe runs right across where it needs to be.

my 2 options at the minute are either get some hoses with different bends and try construct something or buy an alloy radiator and get the pipe moved to face straight back at the stat (which I'll probably do in the long run to make a nicer job)

Scottcooper85

Why break it?

A washer went into the bottom pulley and slipped the timing at the crank and bent the valves mate, to be honest it was the final straw it wasn't worth the time money and stress to me anymore. I'd have sold it complete but was worth no where near as a whole with the broken engine and no seats as it was to break it. The shell is going whole so might get finished yet.
