Hi everyone, not posted on here for must be a few years now. So I thought id start a new thread for both my mk1 sr track nova that iv had for some time now and that's making a return out this year and my new find! a mk1 GL. Came up for sale local and I was lucky to get in there first and snapped it up at the weekend. Both will be getting work done over the coming year and il keep the thread upto date with progress.

Few pics of the SR

Some updates on the GL. First thing was to get a fresh set of number plates made up at work, will be getting the classic style font plates eventually but they tidy it up for now. Got round to fitting my new coilovers so now sits and drives soo much nicer. Took the interior back to oem so the horrible 6x9s have gone and the original shelf back in along with the factory head unit all wired back in. Much happier with it now. Will hopefully get round to giving it a full detail over the weekend.

Well not had much time to post some pics up of the updates on the GL. Stripped the wheels and had them sent for banding. Have gone for 1.5 inch front and 2 inch extra rear. 6 and 6.5j now. Spent quite a bit of time prepping them once back and had a go at spraying them up with a cream lip and brown middles. Wont be everyone's taste but im actually quite pleased with the outcome. Went for some new rubber and have 145 70s all round, slightly lower in profile. Here's a few pics of it now

Nice, i forgot you had that GL, for some reason thought you sold the track car ages ago and started drifting s13's?

The GL is looking awesome, love the banded wheels, is there a lower profile tyre you could fit to give skight more stretch for a bit lowre stance?

I hope to see it at billing, bring it on the stand!..

Cheers Scott. Na never sold the SR, could never do that I think! Although you are right in the drifting, got a ps13 and been doing it for quite a few years now hence the reason the SR hasn't seen light. Do a lot of modified live shows as the drift taxi's doing passenger rides and few shows at pod.

Would love to have the GL on the stand sunday if possible mate? How do I go about doing that bud?

Tyres don't look too bad in the flesh to be honest, but yea I did want a lower profile but was unsure about fitment so just went down from 80 to 70 profile. I think your limited with a 13" as mine are not too wide and I think from memory I would of had to go wider with the tyre to get a lower pro.

First time I see a pic of the orginal speakers balance!!

Really nice GL, it would looks even better without the non original chrome of bonnet a bumpers. I usually prefer early novas completely standard, but I have to admit it looks awesome with coilovers and that steeles.

Thought id give my thread a little update as to what's been going on with both the nova's. unfortunately I had to let the Gl go last year before winter set in. Being used as a daily over winter wasn't a good idea for it and wanting a more practical car for a longer work commute, not having the room to store it either so I thought it best to sell on. Its gone to a good home and a fellow png member.

As for the SR its had an interesting end to last year. I sold my drift car the end of last year so out came the SR again. Took it back to NMS for a check over and adjustments on set up as it had been laid up for a good few years. Had a chance to get a power run done to see what sort of power it was at. Very happy to say the least, a nice healthy 219bhp with 180lb torque. During the end of last year I was contacted about a total Vauxhall feature also on the car which was a nice surprise. The shoot was arranged on my first trackday back out in the car local at Bedford autodrome. Day was cut short with a cv joint breaking but still managed to get the shoot done. Having not driven it in a few years it was so nice to get it back on a circuit and hear them tbs again, which the marshals of Bedford didn't seem to like lol

The weekend just gone I was surprised with the feature in the magazine. So chuffed with it and they have put a great feature together and some great pics.

Here's a few for the thread

The plans for this year are to start to improve it further. Adjustments to suspension set up, some major weight loss that I plan to do over the course of the end of the year and want to do some work to the braking and transmission once funds allow. The build as by no means reached an end

These are ready to be fitted before the next trackday

Little update

Got round to fitting my compbrake topmounts. Mounted standard for now, going to look at fabrication to the top turrets to make use of the adjustments in future when the front cage gets done. Needs the front raising up a touch, loads more adjustment now without the huge standard mounts.

19mm all the way mate, it's just got the joining like that as they didn't make the set up I wanted at the time many years ago.

Some new updates to the car so thought id share what's been happening. Got the nova at home now in its new garage so get more time and easier to do little bits iv wanted to get done.

Took the front carpets completely out now and gave the floor a fresh coat of white. New wheel and snap off boss, need to look at a new nova boss as for some reason the id of the boss wouldn't allow the snap off to fit inside so iv mounted the way it is for now. seems to work well tho.

Some major plans now have been decided over the winter, need to uprate the shafts to big block. No idea why I never did on the build really. Anyone got any good recommendations? been looking at Harry Hockly motorsport as I want something that's going to be strong enough for some more power too soon.

Spent last Saturday working on it making a start to some changes. First was to completely remove the hydraulic power steering, going to quick rack and possibly eps column.

Had some time to work on the sr this weekend. Been sorting parts as Christmas is out the way now and putting more time into getting the car back where I want it ready for the year ahead.

First on the list was to get the big block shafts sorted and was lucky that Kev saw and had a set of equal length shafts and hubs that he no longer needed :thumb:

Got the equal length shaft mounted up. knuckles and hubs stripped and painted and waiting to be rebuilt this week with fresh bearings then they will be fitted up.

Got my new rebuilt corsa rack all bolted in with some solid mounts. nova arms waiting to be put on with some rose jointed ends.

Not too much of and update. Managed to sort my big block hubs and get them all rebuilt with larger fag bearings to suit. Looked into the fitment of the rose jointed track rod ends and the hub knuckle ends are going to need some fabrication to fit along with the steering arms them selves. Has anyone got these fitted on here out of interest??
I have both corsa and nova arms to have a play with to see what will work. Hopefully get this done this week then can get it all fitted.

Have encountered another issue with the placement of my oxygen sensor

Need to see if I can source a shorter sensor if possible or it means manifold off and re locate. Its only just made contact and rubs, 2mm and it would be fine. Just bad luck I guess.

Working out what placement is needed for steering arms and ends, this should give me enough adjustment shortening the arm and making a new thread of approx 20mm and then use the adjustment thread of the rose joint for geo

Yea it just had to happen really didn't it Iain, fingers crossed I can find a shorted one that will work. Yea it doesn't look too easy as it does fractionally get bigger, I only need the re thread upto the point of the adjustment flats end. I have someone who might be able to do it. I have another idea if that's a no go which worked on my previous corsa arms on my corsa hydraulic rack that I had shortened and where fine.

Then it was time for the cage, took the car to jcweldfab in Wellingborough. They removed my old rear section and fabricated a 6 point cage in t45 with some extra braces I wanted at the front. Also tie in to the front turrets with another additional brace across the struts. Had some seat tubes fabricated also in t45. Had my steering column also lowered 30mm and mounted off the bash bar. Lots of work now tho required to get it all painted and all the loom back where it needs to be and all the parts back together before my track day in june.

Washer between the rose joint and knuckle?

Yeah. Might be the pics but looks like it won't allow full suspension sweep how it is.

Thanks Iain, il check that when I do the geometry set up on it. There is a washer under the nut so might be a case of that needs to sit above the knuckle below the joint as you say.

Iain
03-05-16, 10:10 PM
Moving that spacer would do it yeah. The Allen head bolt will allow full rosejoint movement. You may want to machine the spacer down slightly when at your ride height to get your desired steering arm angle.

the spacer is now placed on top off the rosejoint. this spacer must be placed between the knuckle and the rosejoint ;)

I believe the cage is what the yuf of today might call "pucker", being somewhat older I'll settle for 'the dogs danglies'! Looks akin to a Custom Cages design with the benifit of the additional anti crush uprights at the front (A pillars). If you don't mind me asking how much did it cost you?

Had the weekend to make some progress on the car, got all the wiring back together and re routed around the cage and tie in to the turrets. Due to the tie bars coming through the wiring loom hole due the angle it needed to be at iv had to re route the loom further along. Made it look a lot better in places and moved my ecu up top as well. Got the whole cage painted now too which too ages. Has come out ok for now. Dash is back in and also is ok for now, the dash bar and lowering of the column made for hard work but its in. Just the cluster to sort as it needs a little fabrication to fit flush with the surround.

Made a start this week at fitting my new CAE shifter, got the old lever assembly out and all the spot welds drilled and cleaned up with a lick of paint. Iv managed to use the black bracket surround to mount underside for double strength. cables mounted and routed through the bulkhead above the steering rack to aim at the new turret. Just need to tidy the holes with some grommets and then mount up the new turret and bracket on the box. Then play around with set up

Got the car back together in time for Goodwood players classics trackday which I was booked onto. unfortunately it ended before it begun with the cam cover gasket splitting whilst loading onto the trailer. no spare gasket led to yet another failed trackday. just glad it didn't go out on track I guess as it could have ended a lot worse being it was leaking right onto the manifold. hopefully get onto an open pit day next month to give it a test.

All the seats and harnesses back in. shifter all set up. Made a carbon sheet sunroof blanking panel. didn't take any good shots of it tho.

In the middle of fitting a corsa non eps column and double uj.

Well used the car for the first time last weekend for billing in what must be over a year. Gave it a run sat to make sure things where ok with it and then drove upto billing sunday. Joined the png stand for the day which was a nice welcome from all. Wasn't by the car much as I had a good look around but spoke to a few members which was nice to put faces to names. Chuffed to get best engineered which was a nice surprise :thumb: Thanks to all for this.

Only issue to try and iron out is my steering column positioning, moved to a corsa manual column and double uj but it was a late fix up and want to spend a bit more time getting it where I need it and height before getting a trackday booked up. Everything else felt good and went well.

Yea mine is close on static 98dB, only just passed at Bedford. I used an exhaust insert dB reducer and still got flagged, it was my induction noise setting it off I think. See how you get on mate but yea bare in mind you might get some hassle from them.

Started to make a start getting the sr ready for plenty of track time this year. First up I got hold of a closed air box and ducting to get the drive by db down, not good getting black flagged and not being able to drive to the limit. First problem encountered was it was on the large side and was no way going to clear the mc and servo. So as I had planned to go for a floor mount bias pedal box I made a start on that too and get the room for the filter.

Buy a Tilton 600 series box and convert to a hydraulic F17 slave cylinder / feed. You can use stubby master cylinders from AP if space is precious, depending on how tall you are.

It really is the most sensible option. You can do it the other way with a cheap pedal box and a cable but you will almost certainly upgrade that soon after.

It really is the most sensible option. You can do it the other way with a cheap pedal box and a cable but you will almost certainly upgrade that soon after.

Yea I had planned to follow what you had done Craig but it seemed to be adding up! How much did the whole set up set you back if you don't mind me asking?

It's about £1000 worth of parts, but you could probably do it a little cheaper. The AP cylinders aren't needed, I just have them for their quality and reliability.

You could use the Girling ones and notch the bulkhead to house them. I did that first time round, and now it's unused.

The slave and pipe is expensive from vauxhall, but again you could get good used ones for a fraction of the price.

I like that airbox, I looked at similar for Bedford and it's noise strictness. What make is it? mk1 headlights are cheap enough to butcher for a nice intake!

Steering arm looks like it had no misalignment washer above/below, did you mount them under the knuckle or on top? It's always put me off going RJ steering arms as the standard balljoints have a huge angle before they bind.

Thanks Craig. That's actually not too bad. Il look at that then I think. With my seat position and not too tall I might get away with the mounting position.

Its only a pipercross one, all the others I found would be too deep to clear my strut support bar. This just about fits due to the angle it needs to slide into the back plate.

The arms where mounted above as the standard ones do, all washers where right with the spacer washer inbetween to allow the angle flex. Can only think maybe a curb or stress from when I went to snett with it.

Shit that air box is nice.
