We had some lead free solder bought in at work, as it's environmentally friendly, but needs a higher melt temp, was no good when soldering up very sensitive strain gauges on structires test work, we have revertd to lead based

I use lead solder, it eats the solder tips though

Yeah the maplin stuff is lead free.

I don't use an iron as such, its more like a mini blow torch, heat the wire and melt the solder in?

What flux are you using?

The current solder wire I have (bought it many years ago and i'm down to the last bit) has flux in it I think. When the solder has melted you can visibly see it.

I've been using the same big roll for about 10 years, it's full of lead about about 20+ years old. Great stuff. Came from Tandy of all places..lol
