I'm taxing the car today and as with many no as my fuel gauge don't work. So I'm not wanting to run out.

What miles do you guys get to £20 of fuel

Get a large petrol can and put £20 in it, then run your car out of petrol.
Next put the £20 worth in your tank and zero your tripometer.
Then go and get £5 of fuel in a small can.
Drive around until the £20 has run out and the car coughs and splutters.
Then look at your tripometer, this will tell you accurately for your driving style.
Oh and put the £5 of petrol from the small can back in the car to get going again.

I've be done this btw lol

My 1.3 will do about 50 mpg on a long motorway run but about 35 mpg for town driving.

My 1984 swing gauge doesn't work, I just use the tripometer as the fuel gauge, every 200 miles or so, just fill the tank right up, zero the trip, another 200 miles or so, fill again.

If you are going to second guess it you'll end up running out at some point and putting all the rubbish through your carb and then either being lucky enough with some work getting it cleaned properly or having to try and find an accurately working replacement carb.

....and another with a petrol can in the boot and a pad of paper to note mileage. up to 380 per 1.4 tank. mpg aroung 38.

Excellent that your SR is going back on the road after such a long time.

Cheers lads I'll try that, just cleaned the carb out cos it was running like poop:cry: Hope I don't drag too much crud up but needs must.

nova00, Ben did all the hard work, I've just got to get it mint and put a clutch in it but that's no hard ship in the grand scheme of things

tbh im expecting teething troubles as it was last taxed in 1999

Those were the days, I could fill up my mk1 1.0 for £23 and cruise all night and still have quarter of a tank in the morning to last me the week for work lol

Seriously don't be running the tank low/dry, it's not worth it if you get the car running well. To test the MPG, fill the tank full, run for a few hundred miles with the trip set at zero initially. Then refill it at the same fuel pump and you can work out from the miles it has done/litres used without pulling all the rubbish through the fuel lines and carb.

I used to put redex in back in the day when filling back up to flush the system through.

Don't drive it hard, give it a service and remember its a 1.0 lol

I just enjoyed having my first car in 1994 and didn't worry about fuel or cigs for that matter, regal we're 99p for 10 back then lol

You just might want to tune your carb lol! It should be really good on fuel, those ohvs use so little that whether you drive like a granny or rev like a nutter, there is very little difference.
