i am building by own bass box at the moment for a 12" sub. Is it important to line the box with foam or not as opinions seem to differ. any help would be appreciated.

The gaps need sealing to make it air tight but other than that, no foam is needed. however if u want to simulate a slightly bigger box, to give lower but slower bass, fill the box with loft insulation. u can experiment with different amounts to get a sound u like that works with the music u like.
