View Full Version : Difference between early and late LET engines?

I need to find out if my Nova has the square (late) tooth or round (early) tooth set up for pulleys / cam belt etc

Whats the easiest way to find out? Is it to pull the cam belt cover off and have a look or is there an easier way without having to get the toolbox out?

All LET's to my knowledge use the later type

easiest way to tell is by looking at the cambelt cover

For XE's yes, but IIRC all LETs were based on the late type engine.

I'm sure I've seen a couple of early setup LETs, could be converted XEs though

Let's can be either square or round and early or late belt configurations...

The shape of the belt cover gives away if it's early or late, if you look up pics the later one has an extra lump on the back.

Early belt setup is far better than late. Bin the plastic rollers and stupid tensioner

its such a more reliable set up, I converted three in about a month when I was doing them a few years back lol

I've never had either fail on me before (XE or LET) but prefer the late setup

Edit, was the engine in your loon and your hatch early or late? They both had belt related issues didn't they?

One was late and one was early. But that's irrelevant as it was the bolt that failed and they're the same on both engines.

It was the bolts that hold the altonator pulley onto the crank pulley that sheared so a new crank pulley was needed

Thanks for all your help, my engine is the late type, all parts are here just gotta fit them :)
