Hello guys,

We are two brothers (Phil, 29 years and Lionel, 25 years) who are interested in mechanics, race driving and of course the Vauxhall Nova (OPEL CORSA Mk1 in our country)!

We live in the south of France, near Montpellier and we apologize for our poor English.

Our project is a Vauxhall nova track with a "redtop" engine.

This project is now well advanced but we wanted to share with you because you were a great source of inspiration, especially the thread of "Trackdaynova".

A huge thank's to him and to you all. :thumb:

Bonjour and welcome to our forum. Please do not apologise for your English, it looks to be a lot better than the rubbish some native Britons post on here.;)

Now get posting and once you've posted enough, errm, posts, you can put up pics to keep us lot entertained. :thumb:

If you don't mind me asking, what part of France do you live in?

Cheers!
Niek

Hi, sorry, my french is crap but welcome. I have visited the south of France a few times and noticed that especailly around Avignon there are loads of early Corsa As.

I saw an early Corsa A GT in Aixs that didn't have the rear spoiler but had the tailgate painted where the spoiler would go, very unusual. Hope to see pictures of your Corsa A soon.

I'll start the explanations and I'll post pictures as soon as possible.

The first step is the preparation of the bodyshell that we have fully welded.

But first of all, we start by removing all the interior and scrape the soundproofing plates.

Then we put a multipoint rollcage made by "Custom Cage".

http://images.forum-auto.com/mesimages/78516/IMGP5260.jpg

We started by sanding all the joints and rollcage area.

Yes, there is not much rust on this shell !!!

Its spelt Iain ;)

Sorry, but I don't understand ...

The shell is put on a "rotisserie" in order to scrape and weld the bottom.

Those spot welds aren't going to do alot im afraid. Its supposed to be an inch of weld followed by an inch gap then another inch weld

I'm agree with you, but we had never welded a bodyshell, this is the first !

If we were to make another bodyshell, we will be going to weld like on your pic.

We paint under the bodyshell with an anti rust and black paint.

Sorry to the bad pics quality, we've taken with a phone.

philip
11-02-14, 09:22 AM
Local lad who builds motorsport shells/cages reckons on the floors 20mm weld 50-70mm gap otherwise cars too stiff and hes been building rally cars for donkeys years. Engine bay 20mm and 40mm gap.

burgo
11-02-14, 09:25 AM
No such thing as a shell being to stiff

philip
11-02-14, 09:33 AM
Well thats what lad suggested gapping wise on floors. Does alot of historic, grp4 escports, stage cars etc so will do me. Fair enough above pics are about 4/5in gap though.

Iain
11-02-14, 10:25 AM
Surely too stiff would lead to stress cracks instead of slight flex on a competitive non-tarmac cars?

Underbody looks good, I like the strengthening plates on the front mounting points.

burgo
11-02-14, 05:28 PM
Best tell f1 engineers they are making the chassis to stiff then, thats why they wont go round a corner very quick

Les Frangins
05-04-14, 07:47 AM
The position of the air filter has been defined by two criteria:

First, the available space
Secondly, the supply of fresh air "natural" by the air vent at the bottom of the windshield.
Indeed, passing on the hood and back along the windshield, air creates turbulence just at the bottom of the windscreen which fill of fresh air in the compartment below.

It is roughly the same mounting on Renault Clio Group A.

We have also equipped the Nova from a GPS stopwatch.

This item is fabulous, it tells the lap times, split times and a small red Led flashes when the lap times got better!

In addition to all that stuff, it records each session that can then be recovered via an USB key and we can compare best laps on a computer.

We can compare speeds and trajectories.

Always aiming to gain weight, we decided to reduce capacity of the fuel tank.

In addition, unnecessary to have 45 liters of fuel for 20min track sessions.

The most economical solution is to cut the tank in half.

http://imageshack.us/a/img827/4342/u3h6.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img801/6701/om5h.jpg

We welded a plate to close the tank.

And we added a small bracket to fix the tank because it was just by a single strap now.

Now, we are at the present day of the project.

The future evolutions are to change the final drive ratio and put a Quaife differential in the gearbox.

http://imageshack.us/a/img819/4122/xa5i.jpg

The original final drive ratio is 3.55 and we bought a 3.94.

We can watch the difference on this graph.

In blue, with the original final drive ratio and in yellow, the new.

The red line is the maximum engine torque.

http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/7817/zpo6.png

Then at the same time, we will change the front brakes.

We go to put four pots brake calipers and two pieces 280x25.4mm discs with alloy bells.

Almost all parts are at home.

We just expect the discs and brake pads for make the mounting.

Two pictures of bells and brackets design.

Mounting air duct.

We remove the front bumper and we draw what we'll cut.

When cutting, we removed an attachment of the bumper on the front wing, so we have to recreate it.
2 brackets are manufactured with an aluminum tube (light and stiff) .
We set an insert on it to screw the bumper on this bracket.
http://staticclub.caradisiac.com/private/1/mecanique-technique/corsa-projet-piste/photo/51678516/47099680d1/corsa-projet-piste-photo-199-img.jpg

For air ducts, it's pretty basic.
We cut two oblong holes in the bottom of the bumper and after many adjustments (cutting, forming hot ...), we fix air ducts inside the bumper by 4 rivets.

You are right to do the brake cooling. In fact in my experience its a must with bigger brake conversions for trackdays. If you don't sort it, the brakes and hubs get so hot that it cooks the grease in the bearings and CV joints with predictable results. Not only that but everything expandd so much that the wheel studs come loose never mind running the risk of pad cooking and disc warping.

If you are running adjustable coilovers plus stiffer competition springs and are keen to loose some more weight, ditch the front anti-roll bar. If you look at the way they are designed they aren't attached to the body so are of very questionable value. If you look at other sport hot hatches you will see their roll bars are attached much more effectively. My theory is that the Nova ones were added to a bit of an after thought to try and stop roll with the standard softly sprung road set up and to promote understeer.

Great car - keep up the good work! (quite a lot of the photos are missing or is that me being a numpty with my PC?)

Thanks for your experience return's for brake cooling and the front anti roll bar.

For that last, we'll keep to use it because since our last track day's we have doing some important modifcation. (big brakes, Quaife differential)

We would keep the last setup to do a new lap time reference with this news modifications.

Then, we'll try to remove the front anti roll bar and take a new lap time !

PS: Sorry for the pictures, they are on Imageshack. But since the account is not free, the images do not appear ... I'll try to fix that!

Thanks, I also love actions pics !
Concerning the red car behind me, it's a specific track car called "Legend Car", in France we have a championnish of those cars.
It's a single seat, tubular frame with polyester body, Yamaha 900cc motor, 140hp, 480kg and of course RWD with a fixed axle like on go-kart. Very fun to drive !

You can find more informations here --> https://www.legendscarscup.com/

We have 'em in the UK too! And a famous stunt driver Terry Grant uses one.

Sorry if I missed it, what data logging equipment are you using?

Les Frangins
12-12-20, 11:18 AM
We use a Starlane Stealth GPS Lap Timer (http://www.starlane.com/en/products/stealth-gps-lap-timer).
This item is fabulous, it tells the lap times, split times and a small red Led flashes when the lap times got better!

In addition to all that stuff, it records each session that can then be recovered via an USB key and we can compare best laps on a computer.
We can compare speeds and trajectories.

Then I use Dashware (http://www.dashware.net/how-it-works/) software to synchronise the recorded video with datas.
Dashware is a very cool and powerful software and it's free also.
You can personalise every gauges or everything you would like to add on your video and save this huge work as a template to apply on your next vids.
It supports almost every data loggers or apps that you could use.
