Licensed SR MK 1
I have compiled some details some facts regarding LICENSED MK1 NOVA SR’s which I hope you find interesting
It is something of an update of my previous (“109”) thread on this matter which I started two years ago out of curiousity and resulted in a number of very interesting replies and me compiling a list of some of the remaining SR’s. Thankfully as numbers fall the job of tracking the few remaining SR’S left becomes manageable. It has only really possible with internet to find vehicles – lots of Information from PNG/ facebook/ Ebay………. etc……….. etc.
The history - - Original Models
Mk 1 1.3 (launched April 1983
- 1.4 (Launched October 1989)
Mk 2 1.4 (Launched November 1990)
With a very small number of exceptions All 1983 – 1989 inclusive were supplied as 1.3 and all 1990 are 1.4
Recent DVLA figures (1.3/1.4)
- December 2012 75 /24
- December 2011 97 /33
- December 2010 130/37
In the absence of any other figures I will quote these figures. Over recent years licensed vehicles are falling are annually at around 10% to 20% pa
Total SR figures (ie Mk 1 and mk 2 ) published each quarter but do not provide the split by year (which the December only figures do)
There are a number of vehicles that are not included in the above but well be roadworthy
1 SORN (December will always be the lowest month for licenced cars because of winter)
2 Unlicensed for a number of reasons, including
- Pre SORN requirements
- Pre certificate of destruction requirements
- Late license renewals
- Cars in Northern Ireland
- Cars held by trade (resale/ scrap) temporarily
SR’s Licensed in the last 2 years
I know the registrations of at least 99
Of these a number have been scrapped but only 37 are currently licensed (and about 15 off the road as SORN over the winter) Many have been scrapped in the last two years.
At any date not all will be licensed – I estimate that these 99 account for 50% of the vehicles that were licensed at 31/12/12 (ie 50% registrations found and 50% of registrations I have not found)
Now many very different specifications (very few can be said to be original).
- Some are total rebuilds
- Many have rally or track modifications
- Many are not recognisable as SR’s (makes finding more difficult)
The cars located is significantly distorted by the vehicles for sale (which is the main source of information) but of the 99 found as licensed over 505 have been for sale in the last 2 years – many for sale several times.
Mileages on cars range generally range from 70K -120K but there are a couple with significantly less.
Colours as registered (all cars not just licensed)
Red 31%
White 29%
Blue 12%
Yellow 9%
Grey 7%
Silver 7%
Black 3%
Other 2%
There has been only a very small number of project cars back on the road despite the best intentions of many.

I know of 4 not on the road one grey 1.3 f reg don't know to much about this, one silver 1.3 g reg that was and is taxed but not on the road one white 1.4 greg in processes lol and one that I viewed in shell form about 12 months ago white b reg I think did see it on eBay again looking a sorry sight but would never be a road car as to far into rally prep.

A few more facts on the 99 that I have registrations that have been licensed in the last two years
(I would guess 50% of the total that SR’s licensed during this period )
With at least 53 of the 99 having been for sale at least once in last two years there is quite a lot of information as current condition.
Many are modified (to various degrees) – with at least 20 now have larger engines
Current status as of 31/12/2013 (original specification 1.3 /1.4)
Currently Licensed 31/6
Currently Sorn 30/12
Currently Unlicensed 7/4
No longer listed at DVLA
Cars in NI 2/0
Destroyed in fire 1/0

16 can be regarded as summer cars (hopefully will come back on the road in 2014)
7 may be summer cars
20 off the road for other reasons (many in a very poor state when taken off the road / projects)

Ive an E reg SR in my unit the now currently sorned.
My first thought is that your reply was said in jest or at least bait to (Alex's) question .......... where is the E reg SR last seen in Scotland.
I know of 7 SR's E reg on sorn but I do not think your SR is my list. There are many more that are on SORN that I do not have details of, especially later E reg (1988)

Dont have the full reg to hand but its facelift bumper with grey plaid seats haze blue
The only E reg blue one I have on list is E146 xxx

Cant think off the top of my head thr full reg. My mate bought it off ebay this year and another mate now owns it.
Given that it was Ebay it may be that reg. is E639 xxx which is currently unlicensed rather than SORN.

I don't suppose you have any info on mk1 1.4SR, G938 ABC ?
I would quite like it back if its still out there.
G938ABC is recorded as Unlicensed as of 01/05/2009 but I do not have any information on.
The situation regarding such cars is that if a vehicle tax ran out before 31 January 1998 (and not SORNED since) then you don't need to declare it SORN under the SORN rules. (this car is later)
The end of life vehicle regulations (certificate of destruction) came in on 3/11/2003 (this car is later)
In theory could only be held in the trade (resale/ scrapping) or NI otherwise there would a fine imposed and there is therefore a possibility that the car still exists and I know of many from sale adverts etc that do have unlicensed dates after 2003 and also several now licensed in Northern Ireland. There are others that were in major accidents that still appear as unlicensed in the records(presumably scrapped).
As regards 2013, I can see that many of the cars scrapped and transferred to NI no longer appear on the internet and therefore records seem to be more accurate.

These are December figures so summer figures will be a little higher
Figures are as originally registered, not as they are now so a much lesser number are anything like standard

This is the same total as at 31 December 2013 but certainly not the same 120 with several cars being put on and others taken off the road.
Total is down 18% on the total of 147 a year earlier
Not widely published but there is also a new DVLA site with dates that MOT and Licences expire / expired

I have added another 1985 SR to my collection, hasn't been on the road since approx. 1992 so won't have been included in any SORN figures.
It was an NI car from new as well which is rare to find. Will be a while before it sees the road again though.lol

good on you for tackling the SR project. looks a lot of work.
I still cannot answer the question whether your project is the oldest SR left. There are three SORN registed in 1983 of which I know of 2 and therefore could be one older plus also the possiblity that unlicensed. Most of A registered cars are 1984.

Tbf the body is really solid a lash of paint and a few little bits and it will look so much better biggest thing is it needs a battery tray but hardly disasterous

Total licensed SR's (mk 1 and mk 2) - 134 but now includes a handful of NI cars
Down 19% on a year ago even with the extra NI cars
Licensed novas now less than 2.000

Love the fact your dedicated to the SR's lives that are left, it must be an addiction you have that you can't shift now though lol
Yes. Started out as curiousity but now just a simple matter of updating the list each quarter, which inevitably is reducing in numbers all the time, so making updating easier.
The odd SR appears on facebook or ebay but I am surprised how difficult it has been to trace down the remaining 50% of those left on the road . I suspect many are few owners, rarely now used, hidden away in garages.

I don't regret selling it, it was nice but I'm at the age where I Wonna have a fast car so couldn't bring my self to ruin it

Stuart, Glens been keeping tracks of SR's for ages without the aid of that site, to be honest though I'm sceptical of anything unless you actually work for the dvla as to what cars are left sorned or road worthy.
The figures are direct from DVLA and are about right.
The figures are what they say they are - cars that are registered as SR's on the DVLA website at a certain date. Not ones that are SORN or unlicensed.
It does include early Sports that were registered pre Mid May 1985.
Many are unrecognisable as SR's but will still be in the figures.
There are some replicas but many are just the badge !
Summer figures a little higher.
I think I would know by now if the figures were vastly wrong.
Cars are regularly for sale so appears a lot more than actually is.

..........and I do not work for DVLA or any connection but I do have a computer and the figures are on DVLA website for all to read.
Cannot rely on SORN figures as some of cars do not exist (many are just shells or only the plates)
The number of roadworthy cars unknown and would only be a guess.

Licensed SR's have been falling 15% - 20% year on year....
except this quarter where a very small increase in numbers.
Of the ones I know of , many very low mileages between MOT'S.

Some less than 10 miles per annum
Highest annual mileage 12K
The latest DVLA indicate that there are more Licenced SR's on the road at 31 December 2015 was than there were the previous December.

Interesting. I will be taxing mine next month.
Significant increase in SR's on the road this year up from 123 to 145 - reversing some of the fall in previously years. First 10K SR this year also.
Overall a small reduction in novas licensed but significant increases in higher spec models (Sport/ SR/ GTE/ GSI/SRi) and big falls in some base models (merits etc)

I only put a few hundred miles a year on mine, I'd probably use it more if I worked somewhere with safe parking, as it stands its just the occassional sunny weekend use. I guess it makes driving it even more special lol

Interesting read. It's a shame I know I let 2 mk1 SRs go to the scrapheap in the sky.
There were 7 Mk1 SR's at one location 3/4 June
Perhaps a record number of Mk1 1 SR's at one location for many years ? (unless Billing got more)

1.4SR were only Jan 1990 to September 1990
1990 figure per DVLA was 10 licensed at 31/12/2017.
Known Mk 1 cars

i have no details to hand of the other 3
there will be SORN and unlicensed vehicles also.

The clue is in the word LICENSED, so no, not sorned cars :)

Figures for SORNED cars may be misleading .
1Cars that are scrapped are still included in SORN (in some cases plates or less only exist)
SORN can be anything from wrecks to immacculate
Likewise some are unlicensed for various reasons ...... but are sound cars.

Almost three years on from the last post ........... A quick update. Many of the SR's appeared on EBAY and / or Facebook but a few of the licensed SR's are still not found. Perhaps a few low mileage/ rarely used cars are hidden away ?
