View Full Version : 10w60 oil
Hi guys,
Weve got some 10w60 mobil 1 extended life oil at work thats not on stock will it be ok in my c20xe or will it be too thick.
Damo.
i'd say too thick as a c20xe should have 10w40 in it so the cold rating is the same but it will be 4 ratings thicker when hot than what it should be. personally i wouldn't use oil that's so different to what should be in the engine

If you want better oil go for a fully synthetic oil with the same or similar weight. C20XE road engine 10W40 is fine however a 5w40 fully synthetic from Fuch for example is better, if you track it consider going to a 5w50 fully synthetic.
I was thinking about it as i was a freebie lol but just wanted others opinions before i put it in.
Damo.
Slightly different engine, but I happily ran 10w60 fully synth in my z22se when everyone else runs 5/30 lol
I thought SBD recommended 10w60 in the 20XEs. Struggling to find confirmation of this on their site though if you fancy doing your own digging
You do have to be a little cot about higher viscosity when hot oil as the pressure might go up a bit more than usual
Pressure shouldn't go up due to the PRV and also it'll never be higher than cold 10W, it does add unnecessary resistance though where a thinner oil will suffice. Only reason for running thicker is expecting higher temperature. I run 5W50 which is ideal for cold starting but remains stable at higher temps (aging engine that was designed in the 60's so not so tight tolerances, solid lifters etc) I also use a high performance oil with a superior performance which does a lot to reduce the negatives.
It won't really be 'too thick' as it will actually get thinner as it gets hot... it's just that it will be like a hot 60 weight at the higher temp rather than water. But it will potentially reduce MPG and performance.
Basically it won't do damage but you can potentially use something better. I'd be reluctant to use it with winter coming as well.
Hmmm some mixed reactions then I've just read sbd recommend 10w60 for the 20xes on there site so hmm...........
Their xe's do tend to be a little bit tuned though....
I run 10 60 in mine. Also run 5 50. It will be fine! Mine is not std though...
Stuart: yea true matey mines standard as they come lol but in really good health just a little tappety from cold.
will: you reckon I'll be fine to run it then.
