How are they supposed to be taken seriously when whoever created the petition can't get the facts right.
"An exception to this was made in 2012 to move exemption from pre 1971 vehicles to pre 1973 but this only applies in April 2014."
Since 1997 when it was cut off/stopped, it has always been pre 1973 (25 years!).
From April 2014 they are replicating it slightly but instead of 25 years it will be 40 (so 1974) and will not be rolling but the chancellor will have to agree to extend it every year.

Godsake just pay it
waste of bandwidth are them e petitions.
iv never heard any changes from them.
these "tax free" petitions have been going around car forums for many years now and no doubt will do for years to come.
face it,if the government had their own way you woukdnt even be allowed a pre 2000 car anyway

I'm waiting for the car industry to take another dip in sales and see if the government runs another we buy any turd and replace it with a newer turd scheme scrappage scheme lol
There's a bazillion problems with re-introducing that rolling tax exemption scheme anyway.

With more and more zero tax new cars older cars don't stand a chance. What will the government do when the vast majority of cars become tax free because they all meet the low emission guidelines..... They'll move the goal posts and all vehicle that are tax free at the moment will become taxable. Just face it this country will not give the people anything anymore it's just take take take.

As I read this thread its funny as the same thing cropped into my head too.
I personally think there should be just a blanket duty to pay full stop.
No "new car" should be exempt imo,and really why should an old one?
All that does,is mean those with the most money, win.
Whats good for one,is good for all,as they say.
I would be far more in favour of a blanket duty for say £100 per car per year.I don't think calculations based on emissions are fair, based on the fact that, what if its a scarcely used vehicle?

I hope our y plate focus is going to be tax exempt lol
already signed it.
surely it would be fairer to scrap the ved and leave fuel tax the same then the more miles you do the more tax you pay or the more economical your car/driving is the less you pay. i'm getting sick of seeing new 7 series come into work with free tax on the window that can hardly fire up on less than a fiver and chew the roads up with there 2 ton mass and huge tyres yet my 20yro novavan with 1.5 diesel sniffing at the fuel has to have £140 a year tax. i can get 600miles out of £50 of diesel yet the huge 7 series probably only moves off the drive for that and is doing many more miles than my 4 mile round trip 5 days a week. then they have the cheek to say there is no/ little budget to sort the potholes out that all these free tax business cars are creating. i wonder why they budget has run out, it's not because of an old car that is most likely used for shows every so often its because of the 9-5 business cars that they have allowed free tax on.
this country is backwards and is never going to be made to see sense.
but a little poke from the minority is never a bad thing.
anyway rant over :thumb:
Should all be done on mileage really (the 3k I did last year in my £225-VED GT4 polluted less than a £0-VED 2012 Zetec S Fiesta doing average 10k mileage), but then the only honest way to do that is scrap VED and stick it on fuel instead. Increasing fuel prices means bad press for the government though so that won't happen.
I dont care how much tax costs, if you cant pay it, just borrow it out of someone elses window and there number plates lol
