Just mask them up. You can get fine line tape that is east to use and you get a good edge

Or paint it white with 2 pack paint. Then rub it down when its dry and paint it red and wipe the paint off the letters and then lacquer it. This would work best with water base paint on the red

Nick Jackson used to do a lot of them, paint them red then sand off the letters and autosol polish, then degrease and lacquer the whole lot.

Hopefully he will come on and list his actual method, lol

I did the same, painted it red then masked and sanded the letters off. Didn't bother with lacquer just autosol'd the letters and it's been fine.

Same as what i did. Had it painted blue. Masked around the letters best i could and sanded it back to metal. Job jobbed.

If you use a block or bit of wood it will help you keep off the rest of the painted bit.

Id polish the metal first, degrease it. Paint it red then wiper the letters off with a little thinners, then lacquer it all....

In fact i did (bar mine was chromed)
