my mate has a c20xe and wants to fit a set of carbs. but he isnt sure which are best for him. the car will be used as a weekend toy. just after some advise on advantages and disadvantages for each. thanks
40s will restrict an xe, to a point. 45s will suit better.
40s will be ok on a standard engine. 45s if he wants to add cams or go for a wilder build later on with rods pistons etc with 240+ bhp in mind. 40s wont be large enough.

He will be adding cams, arps and a manifold so would 45s be best?

I'd have a word with tommy, Wilfield motors abercynon, if I were him, he's very good with xe's and he runs a 260hp one in his corsa.
That power he'll probably say tbs. Id go 45s or 45mm tbs. 40s will be to small.

He's ringing tommy in the morning. Thanks for the advise what bhp would you expect from 45s, cams and a manifold?

Was going to say, if he's aiming for proper HP then consider 48's or 50's
45mm itbs are larger chokes than 48s anyway and if were going over 240bhp id be looking at tbs over carbs anyway.
usually for a good de with fast road cams, ex mani and 45s should see 190-200bhp comfy.
