I'm going to sell my safety devices bolt in cage in favour of a full weld in one, which cage do you lot recommend? I've seen custom cages ones and safety devices ones which is best?

cheers

Custom cages are cool as penguin piss and look hard core

Nah didn't get one mate

What are you like with a welder? Its a very rewarding job if you do it right. You could keep your 6point, weld it in and add to it.

philip
09-10-13, 08:59 AM
Be alot safer with a proper cage than modding the bolt in one with all the carbon going onto it though.

8valve-craig
09-10-13, 09:18 AM
It would still be a proper cage, as long as you use the right materials and have a coded welder buzz around it.

Custom cages charge £2k because of their patterns and experience, which is fair, but if you have the skill / confidence then I would say cut and tack it in yourself and save a fortune.

Just thought it might be something to consider.

I would follow Craig's advice unless money no object...cage kits are very expensive and half the time they require a lot of finishing.

Is your life not worth 2k then? And a poorly designed cage is more lethal than no cage at all

mk1nova_rich
09-10-13, 11:18 AM
Yes if you can afford a 2K cage then I'd do that

philip
09-10-13, 11:29 AM
The cage its self is about 700 I cant see them charging 1300 in labour either. Lad around the corner from me owns R.E.D and is a custom cages fitter as such. Anyone decent at welding can have the cage stamped. You get sent a sample piece to weld together, send back to CC and if passes you get a cert plate + number to ok the cage. I could start fitting cages tomorrow and have them certed.

I know what you mean about modifying the bolt in but ive been there and wish id put a proper cage in at the time, far better design too. If wasnt fact barry was doing so much carbon id probably suggested same thing but carbon needs some decent support.

Mieran

Is there no motorsport places near you that can make you a custom cage?

Might work out better than buying one off the shelf.

The cage its self is about 700 I cant see them charging 1300 in labour either.

Cage is £612 to purchase in kit, Fitted it is £1623, and lets not forget the £324 VAT, so getting on for £2k yes.

Is your life not worth 2k then? And a poorly designed cage is more lethal than no cage at all

Life is priceless, But its only cutting, profiling and welding. Lots of us are capable of that to a more than good enough standard.

I copied their design, and used the same materials they would have used, which came in at around £300. Would reccomend it to anyone considering the same.

This is a fair point, well made. The cage is going to pretty much be the only energy absorbing part in anything other than a frontal impact.

Shame so far away as the lad at r.e.d is **** hot cage builder and well priced too. Wallace performance anywhere near you matey? They may know someone near you thats all

Thanks for the replies, can't imagine I'd be too handy with a welder tried it once years ago lol but on the plus side I work in a maching and welding shop so one of the welders would happily help me out if need be. My works pretty good for letting us do homers so I'll see if they'll let me take the car in.

If they don't let me take the car in ill happily pay the money to get it done correctly at the end if the day it has to be safe. Craig I just wanted to buy a ready made weld in one to save hassle etc I can claw some if the money back selling the bolt in.

yeah Wallace is just a 1 minute walk from my work, they're the guys that will be mapping my car I think.

Hockley cages are very good and cheaper than CC fully profiled. That's going to be my option when I get round to it sometime in the 2030's

Custom cages are good but I would go for the high spec tube not sure the code they used but it's stronger lighter and my mate regrets not using it on his racer will upload some photos of his cage he did himself when get a chance.
Plus ure takin roof off helps to get to welds over the top also

bazzap8389
09-10-13, 08:12 PM
Yeah i was going to go for the t45 stuff no point going half assed on it eh lol just spoke to a welder at my work he'll happily weld it in for me which is a boost.

09-10-13, 09:46 PM
Surely that 2k price is drive in drive out. Im sure if you were to deliver th car fully stripped ready to go it would be cheaper

If you want a good/safe cage try hauser racing, they will do you a T34, CDS steel or 4130 or another good place to deal with Is John Sleath

The is nothing wrong with a bolt in multi point safety devices cage, in fact they are superb. I would agree that sparco and omp cages for novas are a a bit limp! I would be of the opinion that some of the modern day weld in cages are overkill. My own personal opinion.

bazzap8389
10-10-13, 12:25 AM
I only have a 6 point bolt in at the moment and since I'm upgrading it I thought I be aswell just go for a weld in one, agreed some are a bit overkill but I like it lol

I would recommend Chizfab aswell mate, I had them build my exhaust for my Let. Top Job they made of it! They specialize in drift car preparation etc. so building cages is what they do well, along with everything else! :thumb:

IMO go for the basic triangulated one from custom cages then gusset it. Anything more than that is overkill on a light nova body.

The custom cages site is a bit crap for finding the proper one, all I remember is drop down boxes and then selecting multi point gets you there, think it's from the home page.

Is the t45 really worth the extra £300 then?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v11/CorsaNova/NovaSaloon/92d99851.jpg

Good for side mounts or bottom mounts, allows for low seating position.

stt
12-10-13, 11:11 PM
I would go t45 as given the £300 as a percentage of the overall spend on the car it's minimal and its something you'll regret later
Not only is t45 lighter it's significantly stronger

dgbnova#1
12-10-13, 11:32 PM
They don't use the t45 for nothing and its lighter so you can add extra tubes and still come in under the weight of a standard weld in.
Those seat rails look a bit limited on adjusting?

bazzap8389
13-10-13, 02:50 AM
