View Full Version : Dan's X25XE Nova.
Hi all, well I sold the TD earlier this year. As some of you know I also bought Stu pots/Brown Bears saloon last year as the 'new' project.
Well I have always wanted a V6 Nova so I thought I may as well have one now I can afford to insure one.
When I bought the car it was fitted with a very broken X16XE, as I had a 20XE lieing about I decided I may aswell fit it until I source the Vee lump.
Well late September I picked up a nice x25xe fairly local.
I will let the pictures do the talking.

First major thing I did when the XE was in was to polly bush the car, fit big ram billys and progressive heavy duty -35mm springs.

and 2ltr brakes ofcource.

http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture003.jpg?t=1380907633
It was/is also running a home made 2.5inch exhaust system with a 1.75 tail pipe for the sleeper look.

Any way the other day I got bored and decided to start rubbing down the bay (ready for the vee)

We all know the rear manifold is huge so I had to make a new one to clear the rack.

http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture037.jpg
Even managed to use the old heat shield etc
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture039.jpg
Now I know they don't just bolt in, so before I painted the bay I had a trial fit.. (wow so glad I did!)
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture040.jpg

http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture042.jpg
Now I am going to add I want to keep the car looking standard and I really don't want to be cutting up the car too much but I have had to make a few compromises. First off all there is no way on earth the front inlet would fit with out removing the slam panel completely..
Chop!
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture044.jpg
Luckily enough for me I have recently taught my self to ally weld.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture048.jpg
So yeah the front inlet has lost a bit of size but I have made it as big and well shaped as possible, if it doesn't run right back to the drawing board but I have spoken to a few folk who don't think I will notice a difference. We will see.
Next was the radiator. This one easy.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture050.jpg
Move it forward an inch on the O/S.
With inlet, rad and exhaust all fitted.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture051.jpg
Where I drilled the spot welds on the front panel I have made up some mounts to bolt the slam panel too.
I had to cut a fair bit of the slam panel away so I have had to reinforce the under side a little.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture052.jpg
The next big problem is the wiring loom, if runs to the N/s on a vectra and doesn't have a round grommet like the C engines. So I have run the loom through the n/s of the servo and have fitted a X16 loom grommet.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture053.jpg
ECU will mount behind the glove box.http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture056.jpg
The front panel now. The dip stick also had to be moved about 6 inches
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture057.jpg
I had to wire up a VSS and a transponder so I used a old loom for the right colour wires. Made a lovely little loom up and looks nice and oe. Not 100% done as I need to put the dash in etc to complete.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture058.jpg
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture059.jpg
Still needs tapeing up completely.
Feeds from fuse box.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture060.jpg
I also had to cut a section out the under side of the bonnet :(
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture061.jpg
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture062.jpg
Mount isn't finished. I will strengthen it once the engine is out. Everything is trial fit still.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture066.jpg
Another problem was I could use the standard bonnet stay so I made this up.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture067.jpg?t=1380907495
That is it for now though. I need to weld up the old loom holes and the slam stay mount then ready to come back out and paint the bay etc. I have tested the loom, cranked the engine and the fuel pump pumped so the immobilizer is working correctly. I cant start it though as the fuel lines are too short ( cant get to them until the engine is out)
I will keep you updated!

Well done, your making it look easy. Exhaust work looks great. I though the bulk head needed cutting back to clear rear bank.
Or have you tilted engine forward ? And that's why you've cut slam panel?
will be following this with intrest
Martin.p
04-10-13, 09:04 PM
Also intrested in your comment on Ali welding. I'd like to give it a go myself. What equipment do you use? How you going about it?
Thank you! Nope, its the rack that gets in the way. I still had to flatten the exhaust a little to make it clear. The C25xe engine fits in well but they are getting common so I decided to go for something a little different. Best thing is the insurance is nearly £300 cheaper than a 20XE converted Nova.
Also intrested in your comment on Ali welding. I'd like to give it a go myself. What equipment do you use? How you going about it?
I used 100% argon, 1.2 mm wire and a big ish welder (320amp) set to about half power (so fine for a hobby welder if thats all you have) and 5mm plate. I just practiced loads. Problem is you get a nice flow then it blows through so you are best going in short bursts to start with.

Really!!
and with that extra power coupled with the extra weight over the front wheels for traction, it's probably not that far from the usable power a let nova could put down in comparison. And like you state, being cheaper at the same time!!
looking good! will the airflow not be restricted on the intake pipe now you have made it slimmer tho?
Martin.p
04-10-13, 09:40 PM
I don't think the difference will be noticeable. It's probably the same restriction as a air filter that has been neglected for years. Plus all the time, this engine is not going to be working as hard as if it was trying to pull a vectra along with a clogged filter.
I do have 200bhp limit on the insurance though, and the engine was only £280 so much cheaper than a let. I has a 3.0 litre lower inlet and G cams fitted too along with a XE fly wheel so should be getting close to 200bhp and nice and revvy.
Thanks, maybe. It does run twin lambda system so in theory it should compensate enough. Not that it will make that much difference though. Maybe slight throttle response. I will have it on a Dyno one day and see what it makes. As long as it runs smooth I will be happy.
looking good bud, id put mine up against any stock LET .....
Thanks nobby. It was your old Gsi v6 that started the ball rolling for me years ago.
Cracking Fabrication Skills there Dan, has all the makings of an excellent project! Also I like the way you made the removable slam panel, I never thought to remove it like that on mine and just went for the usual way. Top work So far :thumb:

Having uneven flow across the cylinders won't be making for a healthy engine.
If you're restricting an inlet for the sake of the slam panel, at least do it to the other to match.

Thank you very much. Its more of a standard sleeper this one but I want it to look half decent.

Then dropped out. Bay wants a the old loom holes welding up, smoothing and a good rub down. Then primer, gloss and lacquer hopefully by the end of thee week. I need to cut down one of the heat matrix pipes a bit more and tidy up the engine loom now I know how it will run in the bay. Give it a week or so it may even be running. Dan

Thanks pal, yeah the kinda finish i want. Nothing to fancy but tidy and factory looking.
Well I had an hour of light after work tonight so I thought I best finish the welding.
Just a bit around the os mount.

My friend put one of these in a mk3 astra, couldn't get it running, an auto electrician traced the problem to a 12v feed for the transponder. Apparently theres 2 feeds, and one needs to come on first?? maybe one perm 12v and other switched?) as my friend just joined them. Might be of some help.
Really like these projects that require problem solving, and custom fabrication, and a bit of trial and error, keeps it interesting! Nice work so far
Cheers and thanks for the heads up, one of the feeds comes from a ignition + and the other is a battery +, there is also a signal wire from the VSS. I believe I have done it correctly but time will tell.
Update.. Made up a bit of a shelter and sprayed the bay yesterday. Looks pretty good to say I wasn't going for a show finish. Don't have any decent photos but I will get some next week. I plan to fit the engine in the next few days too. Hopefully in a couple of weeks she will be running.

You will need to strengthen the mount mate look at where the arrows are that bit will bend over as its not supported my first mount i made up did this, mines hardcore though i added a 1 inch box piece down the whole side to stop it moving 100% lol

Bond and seal, it will be fine as I have used it before.
Well I came home and had half an hour spare. Used it productively!

Pissedd off though as one of the rear mount bolt holes which goes through the floor had been crossed threaded in the past, as I was torquing it up it gave way. I have put a longer bolt in for now but I am still going to have to helicoil it before it goes on the road.

Update!
Well I would to wrap this project up in the next week or so. As I had the weekend off I thought I may as well make the most of it.
I started today off by, making + fitting hoses.
Top hose.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture081.jpg (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/balley77/media/X25xe/Picture081.jpg.html)
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture082.jpg
I used a c16xe top hose, 90 degree bend and a Nova gsi bottom hose to make this.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture086.jpg
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture085.jpg
The bottom hose is off a corsa.
The heater matrix pipes are also off a corsa, cut down a little though.
The header tank pipe is the standard nova item reduced to 14mm on the engine side.
I finished the exhaust.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture084.jpg
I then clipped up all the loose wire and pipes. Fitted the inlet and run it up. Struck up well but the alternator bearings are a little noisey as is a lifter.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture089.jpg
Once all that was done I thought I best put the slam panel and bumper + suspension on.
Did that and notice I hadn't allowed for clearence on the rear exhaust for the os drive shaft.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture091.jpg
I was really pissed off at that point as it was practically done.
****ed about for half and hour or so avoiding the truth basically, I then thought sod it and started cutting up the down pipes (again).
how it started.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture092.jpg
How it is now.

http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture095.jpg
I just hope it has enough clearance.
Dan
Well fitted the dash this morning and checked all bolts for tightness etc. Put it back on its wheels then went for a spin.
Fairly impressed tbh. The idle is a little lumpy but other than that its great, pulls like a train and has loads of torque. Too all the haters it even handles okay for what it is.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture098.jpg (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/balley77/media/X25xe/Picture098.jpg.html)

Just needs few little thing to get it right. One of the problems at the minute is it seems to be leaking a fair bit of oil from round the oil cooler. I will wip the manifolds off again soon and have a look.
So to anybody wanting to do this conversion it can be done but it is a bit off a ball ache.

pretty good Scott. Not really that much different than a xe bar the fact it's faster. Pulls like a bloody train. Torque is incredible!

thank you very much :)
I haven't had a chance to update for a while but I am still keeping on it. Log book has been sent off with the new engine size etc and the new tax disc arrived today. Very happy about that :)
I managed to get a few goodies from the local scrap yard the other day, one being a 4 bar fuel reg and the other being this.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture100.jpg (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/balley77/media/X25xe/Picture100.jpg.html)
Its a rear ARB off a Cavalier, today I started making the clamps for the bushes. I want them to be strong so used some 3mm bar.
http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture101.jpg (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/balley77/media/X25xe/Picture101.jpg.html)
I am going to do it similar to the guide on here but weld a plate on the beam for strength.
I bought some 14 x 5.5j freshly powder coated steels off a mate as I wanted a slightly wider rim for obvious reasons, I then hunted for some tyres and got a good deal on a set of yokies!.

I also sourced a set of badges. Nice OE look, tail pipe needs sorting out.

and I bought a set of GTE shafts, fitted new outers and they already had the correct Cavalier inners. I dont trust my machined hubs, and this seemed an easy option.

I plan to renew the rocker cover gaskets this weekend, paint the lower inlet to match the rest, fit the shafts and hubs and hopefully fit the ARB. It still needs a new tank fitting and a bloody good clean but its getting there.

Thank you.
Well I spent last night and today trying to do a couple of finishing touches.
First off was the cam covers were both leaking, I stripped down all the intake, renewed the gaskets with the best ones I could buy and used the correct sealant and put the covers back on around 9 pm last night. I was working out side with just a bloody spot on light, worked okay though.

I also painted the lower inlet the same colour as the rest and fitted a Bosch 4 Bar FPR.

Bargain of a price from a local scrap yard too, much better than the £60 Courtney Sport Charge.
This morning I put it all back together and fitted my new 22 spline shafts, main reason for fitting these are I don't really trust my big block hubs.

Once that was all don I gave her a good clean, and took a few snaps. What are people thoughts on the new rims?

Thank you very much, I do like a factory look when carrying out conversions especially with the amount of thrown in unsafe projects about.
A little update, mounted the Cav rear ARB and changed the rear springs.
Basically made some plates, offered up the ARB and welded them and two bolts to the beam to mount it too. Painted the bare metal and job done.

Photos aren't the best due to the light but you get the idea.
After going for a quick spin I was very impressed with the improvement, feels much firmer, seems to turn in easier and flatter too. Overall its the best £7 I have ever spent on Car!
I would recommend it to anyone with a Nova!
Next job is to change the fuel tank, that is for another day though.
Dan.
top work buddy, i think this is something that my astra will benefit from, need to finish the coilovers first though lol
Thanks, I believe it is a worth while mod on any front wheel drive car.
I called DVLA up this morning as my log book hadn't come back after nearly 2 months even though I received the correct tax disc at the end of November. After ten minutes on the phone they basically admitted there had been a mix up between departments.
Any way just checked and it has finally been updated.

Vauxhall cavalier mk3 1.8 saloon or a vectra a in Europe. Very worth while modification in my opinion!
Fitted the tank the other day, it now doesn't leak :)
Alos fed up of not being able to select first and second so made this! http://i818.photobucket.com/albums/zz102/balley77/X25xe/Picture122.jpg (http://s818.photobucket.com/user/balley77/media/X25xe/Picture122.jpg.html)
