i recently blew my 1.6 8valve rally spec engine and thinking about an upgrade. i had the idea in my head of using an x18xe1 small block 1800 and my e16se head. kinnda like the ford zeevh with a 2ltr zetec block and 1.6 8 valve head. has anyone tried this and could shed a little light on some things..

Im just going to bore out the E16 block to suit the pistons as I dont think the oil and water galleries match up

Aye mate, crank fits the block anyway so just wap the crank rods and pistons into the E16 block, I was told the maximum bore limit on the E16 is 82mm the z18 pistons ( same as x18xe1 ) are 80.5 iirc also the crank uses a 6 bolt pattern for the flywheel so its all good

You shouldn't have low cr mate but valve clearance is an unknown as of yet mate

I can sort valve clearance easily though. Time to put plan into action I think I have a x18xe1 in the work

Just plasticine on the crown and dry build, if you need to machine some pockets so you have you 1-1.5mm piston-valve clearence then should be sorted. 1.5mm is more of ano ideal but i know lads who run 1mm on rally cars.

the main issue is with the oil pumps. the 1800 has a larger one, apparently. i only found this out recently, after i got hold of a crank, pistons & rods.

Tbh id of thought using the 16se block, the 16se pump will be fine also. Could always fit a few washers behind the relief to up o/p or fit some steel pumpgears if going to be reving it quite high(above 7.5k)

no, its more to do with the size of the 2 flats on the crank. i'm trying to get a pump at the moment to find out.

i managed to get a block in work and done loads of different things but i am using full xe1 bottom end with my e16se head i had block 3 oil galleries and i have got a gasket coming that will block 2 water galleries and ill have to ma a new engine mount but apart from that i think am good to go :-)

I know someone who phoned Cosworth for advice on a build as he only had 10 thou of clearance... their response was "so it clears then" lol

seems fair enough

Only just read this, 1800 pump fits but you have to shave a bit of the block away for it to sit flat.
