View Full Version : Cheap second car wanted - any suggestions as to best make/ model?
Prefereably less than 3K
Required as a second car
Needs to be lowish insurance group
Also needs to be a colour - not black/ grey/ silver
If you just want a small engined car and are not too bothered about age, then a K11 Micra is ideal.
Last of the line 51/02 'Tempest' or 'Twister' model for about £800 is what I would be doing.
Bulletproof mechanicals and run on fresh air.

Micra - possible
Rover 45 - a no, not what we are looking for, for several reasons. Too high an insurance group for the boys

If power isn't a concern but economy is I'd seriously consider a late model Peugeot 106 1.5D. It's 1.0 Nova-esk slow BUT will return 60mpg even on short journeys, are dead cheap to buy and maintain.
Also GR9 4 VEG OIL SAVINGZ
My diesel 106 was tits hot on fuel.

I might have a 206 gti in black coming up soon for about £800-£900

That won't be a low insurance group.

Sorry didnt read that lol. And you said you dont want black lol
Corsa B 1.0 12v ~ run for ever on pennies for £800 in a last of the line S/T reg.
Size? Economy?
Yaris or Colt maybe if you're after something small and cheap?

Rusty ****ters in comparison to my suggestion.
Poorer build quality and a timing belt on the antiquated, inferior engines. Not to mention a lot older.

I'd get a Mk1 focus tdi on as late a model you can get for the money you have.
not looking for a diesel

not looking for a diesel
Ah okay, the petrol ones are also good value for money (we've a 1.8 petrol) they're slightly more thirsty than the diesel equivalent though.
ours has just got to 140k on a Y plate and only standard running issues. It's just had a new clutch that cost £200 fitted.
mk1 focus are decent for what yoiu can pick them up for.
Just dont get the lower power 2.0 version.
Depends if you want to spend the whole of your budget.

Not quite what your after, my brother is selling his '05 corsa SXi 1.2, in black. Can get details if your interested?
2.0 poverty spec vectra b? have had 2 in the past year both for less than £500 with t&t. Decent on fuel if you dont drive like a cock & i can insure one for under £1500 at 19 after losing my ncb and declaring the accident i had in my first one.. Go plenty well enough (130 lol) just watch out for cracked exhaust studs on the 2.0 model, rotten rear arches and lower rear suspension bushes. apart from that there good cars for the money imo
All sorted .........KA scrapped ................and a deposit paid on a Suzuki Swift !
and a photo of the car

and even faultless service by the garage

should of bought this ;p
You could have bought a diesel Corsa B off me for £250 and gone on two holidays instead.
Somewhat of an irony in that the KA which was sold for scrap is back on the road licensed this month. It did fail the MOT on sills but in repairing the sills it came to light there was much more serious (dangerous) hidden problems with corosion of rear suspension (not repairable). No doubt the repair done was on the basis that out of sight issues do not count..
................and by an amazing coincidence today saw our old KA parked at the Trafford Centre today
I was tempted to put a note on it (warning) but thought better of it.

Couldn't you contact the dvla regarding it, if it was that dodgy it makes you think maybe how many other cars that were scrapped where you took yours are still on the road... quite worrying tbh.
Two garages told me similar. The problem was that the water has leaked past the filler cap and all the support to the rear passenger spring had gone. I had very history on the car (5 owners) some obviously do not know if any previous accidents but 85K and 10 years was too much. Apparently in needed the whole of rear suspension dealing with. And it only failed MOT on the sills (easy fix) but came to light when being done, Whole car had had its day really.
may be they just repaired it?
