my wife has an 02 1.6 zafira which has developed a fluid leak. it appears to be coming from behind the drivers side front wheel so i had assumed water pump. however, would this still drain all the coolant when the engine is not running? or should i be looking for a broken hose.

You need to carry out a cooling system pressure test and see where it's leaking from

...and the easiest way to do that is to get the engine up to temp where the pressure will reach 14psi..

...then look for leaks and steam.

the problem is, i took the drivers side front wheel off tonight and attempted to fill the coolant. however it just sound straight out from the back of the engine behind the pulleys. In all it is probably taking less than two minutes to drain 2 litres

Should be pretty obvious to spot then. Ps mind you dont scald yourself!

Take the covers off and check the water pump.
