Sitting on a drive near my work, hasn't moved in the year i have worked there. I checked the reg online, its a k reg and i know its a 2ltr gt non turbo. Any good? Going to stick a note through the door once my nova has gone and see if they want rid of it.

Worth it? Been told they are a pain to work on, is it an engine out job to do the cambelt? Do they like to rot?

Want something new to play with, but cheap lol

would it not be easier to knock on their door?

I think some do rot out but you can soon have a look at it.
The engine is in the back so the handle well but if the back goes it goes, a lot of people use to crash them in the old days.
Some of them you can remove the roof panels.

Sorry thats about all I know.

T-tops leak. The 3SGE engine is a waste of time, considering how cheap you can pick up the 3SGTE and how tuneable they are.

Yeah, they rust, but my mate has had three now, various turbo models. All have been in VGC.
So I don't think the issue is that big.

Anything older than a Rev 3 is also to be avoided.

They are a nice car, my mum has had a Jap import G-limited Auto for about 5 years now. Hers hasn't rusted at all, I don't think its much of an issue on them, it was on the original boxy MK1 though. The back end issues were resolved pretty early on with them having wider wheels on the back (a 92 will have this), solved the problem. The earliest ones wont have wider wheels, and any aftermarket alloys wont be either.

They are a bit of a pain to work on, as the engine is in the 'middle', theres not much access or space to work on it or see what your doing. But its not too awful, and probably still a lot better than most cars made more recently. An alternative would be a Gen 6 Celica, not rear wheel drive, but easier to work on, more practical, and they can be picked up dirt cheap now.

They're not too bad to work on. Unbolt the side panels (next to the sail panels) and stand on a spare wheel or similar and you will find it a lot easier.

I have removed/fitted AC pump, SMIC, de-cat etc.

They are no worse than many FWD cars in that respect.

Its actually a H reg dont know where i got K reg from. Going to knock on the door once this nova has gone. Its not a car i would go out and buy, but never know might enjoy it.

Only asked as didnt want to waste my time if they are crap.

As far as they go, that one is pretty crap, tbh.

It's as old as they get too. Combine that with some layed up neglect, it could be a rotter.

Looks like a UK car? If so, it's an N/A and pretty worthless.

With no mot itll be worth a few hundred tops.

Best thing to do would be to get some cheep gravel tyres and join your local grass track club.

^ agreed, why spend more than you need to on a car you don't actually want when there are thousands of perfectly good, road-worthy examples to test drive and choose from.

by the time you buy a battery, a set of discs to replace the no doubt rotten items on the car, an MOT, some tax and whatever else caused it to be left there in the first place, you could have a decent one.

unless its a bargain it's a waste of time.

Still worth an ask. They might let you have it for next to nothing. Or even nothing. Maybe rag it about for a bit then sell it on.

Not much help but I had a turbo mr2 with a rev3 engine fitted iirc. Awesome car and driving position was perfect! They're proper cheap now so I wouldn't bother with the non turbo tbh.

Rev 3 Tubby onwards 4DW y0

The driving position and planted feel of the mid-engined layout are very good.
Such a car for the money.

Was probably the best car I have had for the driving position, was stupidly dangerous though. The back end would constantly catch me out lol I'd love another one.

Apparently they require a pretty low rear tyre pressure. 28 psi or something.
Many people run them too high.

As if they need any extra help to step out! lol

They do hold an interest for me too. Although more the AW11 than SW22.
I was looking for a good, original car to build a 'mk1.5' from, or buy one of the awesome/gay candy red Supercharged 4AGE factory jobs.

I bought an Escort instead. My MR2 owning mate cannot understand my logic. lol

I have never drove or been in a Rev 1. The nervous rear end (lol) is still present on all revisions.

Like owning a pet wolf. One day... lol

I thought it was supposed to be 'improved' (lol) on later revisions?

was it not like what they did with the MX-5 and 'de-tuned' it to make it safe for grannies?

Grannies drifting haha. Think its old people that live there as well lol

Mine was a 1990 one lol but had a later engine fitted, that would explain why it was a bit unpredictable ha.

The mk2 is is the only MR2 I don't really rate. Seems too big and heavy for a sports car but it's definitely got the best engine.

I have a 280bhp rev 3 turbo engine in this. Great fun and not twitchy at all.

Sick of rust though and it's still quite heavy so bought this now to drop the engine in hopefully.

Bit more than that as wanted a black one so it looked a bit less gay. Only done 77k as well. £1600.

Already spent a fair bit since though on TTE lowering springs, TRD style body kit and some decent tyres to replace the ditch finders that everyone seems to fit to these.

To be fair, I was basing it on probably being knackered in some way. Sounda a good un!

There's a black one with hardtop, along the road from me. Definitley the colour to have.

Is the 3SGTE conversion common then? I know the V6 is popular.

It's not great but I have to remember its still 13 years old. Wish this had a hardtop.

Only two 3SGTE swaps that people know of in the UK and a handful abroad so not really. Bay is pretty tight and a heavy engine upsets the purists. I'm thinking 280bhp in a car weighing about a tonne will be good!
