View Full Version : pub z20let talk...
after reading over time toatal vauxhall mag, and people threads on forums and facebook ,can anyone tell me how the **** z20let lumps are (claiming) making 500 to 600bhp, with an exhaust, intercooler, and a few other bolt ons, is this pub bull**** talk, or real, please enlighten me...........
Delusions of grandeur me thinks,
tv is like a tabloid....stretch the reality, and never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn...it sells copies
even on facebook pages, astra gsi boys reckon they have 500+ on tap, is that even possible?? its like these 500+ bhp monster 2.0l saab engines :bullsht:
oh yeah, the ones that are so good theres barely anyone that's carried it out?
oh yeah, the ones that are so good theres barely anyone that's carried it out?and the ones that do work, were have 500 horses escaped to lol

How much is one of those engines standard then?
190bhp standard, so 300 more with an air filter
Even the LEH is only 240 ish, mapped, filter and exhaust will see 300 but unless it has a dyno print out is still call bullsheets!

Its not all bull there are a few very well specked zlets pushing over 500.
A lad up the road from me has a 430 bhp zafira gsi and still has room for improvement.
If you're pockets are deep enough then anything is possible
Fcuking crap engines

My daily is a mk4 gsi turbo. Phase 3.5 and it's got a rolling road slip saying 288.9 bhp. But I see clowns selling them same spec claiming 330 lol
Tbh I don't care what power it is cos its quick enough to not bore me to tears and still works well as a family car too, so it's a winner for me

Correction....fair play and all credit to the handful that genuinely are pushing those sorts of figures. Unfortunately these folk are hugely outweighed by the cap wearing halfwits that have an airfilter and some Samco hoses and reckon they have the same power
so are people referring to the brummie with the tv featured '700hp' zafira, who has never actually won a 1/4 mile at the pod....
It's not limited to zlet owners, a guy up here claims his ford focus has 800bhp lol
i had to once spend ages explaining to a kid who i worked with that simply fitting an astra gte gearbox to an astra 1300 wouldn't actually make the car do 130mph, like he was claiming, but most likely his speedo was out by a mile..... then proved he was spouting shyte by wasting him on a local A road in my 1400 with 1.2 merit 4 speed box....

Blue one with the shopping list on the doors?
If yes, i do remember it being bloody fast up the strip....
I thought the 700bhp zaf was silver and not actually 700. Was 500 with a 200 nos kit I think. He phase bollocks pisses me off with the zlets. Oh ive put a 3.5 map on my standard car therefor must be 350 bhp! No idiot.
Like with any engine build it properly and yes big numbers are possible but most are 300bhp
Because rolling roads will tell you any story you want them to.

I personally think the zlet engines are dear to tune 400 for remaps 500 for exhaust and that's cheap it's all pub crack.
Xe with a power cap and a chipped ecu were its at 195bhp no bother
Well put it this way.
The vx220 lot have a fair few around the high 300bhp mark and that's with a butt load of cash thrown at them and one or two at an actually 500bhp but again with soooooo much cash chucked at them its not funny and its barely a zlet anymore other than the block.
I can't believe Astra owners have that kind of cash to spare.

There's a few local to me claiming big power over 300 with jump a map and exhaust! The one claims to have beat a gtr, Audi r8 and a bently! now going for more power so I bet he will now be going after veyrons!
There is a vx220 turbo around here and iv heard stupid claims like 700hp about that but I believe it is a genuine 500hp and seriously fast.

I'm in south Wales this one is yellow, he works for some tuning company apparently, it does have a lot of trick bits so imagine it to be close to 500hp, not 700 tho!
I bet 500 is too much in one of them with them weighing nothing!

The yellow 1 is my mates he worked for thorney for a while. Last time he said it was around 400 bhp but is now being built again for more power

Sounds good. I bet that shifts? Iv heard lots about it, once told it was 700hp.lol. There's lot of pub talk bhp figures in the valleys!
even 400 out of a zlet sounds like bull**** to me

07-08-13, 07:23 PM
Lol. According to a z20let pub talker who lives by me 400hp is easy and when he's finished building it he's going to take the piss out of my Cossie.:)
Had a good one today, had an xe corsa, told me de cat and power cap and it's 200hp.
at least use the correct term... PHP. pub horse power, a pub horsepower is obviously much better than a normal horsepower, it is also more popular, which is why there are always more of them....
valleys is all full of pub talk lol lol
my nova with all the **** in it is 252bhp at the wheels, hard enough to drive that, so 400+ must spin the world of its axis lol

Don't forget the Vxr badges that adds at least 50hp! Or the courtenay window stickers.
best get some Reg & Al receipts too, cos they seem to be the only way to make power...cough [tv mag] cough

It may be a lot to the front wheels but the blue nova did a pretty good job of putting it down,4.9 0-60 12.9 quarter mile and on to 160mph, very impressive for brunnters!

Cost 5k ish if am honest by time I bought ecu garret rods pistons maching adds up

09-08-13, 08:32 PM
Imagine it would cost a lot to get a real 500hp from one. It's cost me around £5k to get 530hp out of my Cossie, and Cosworth engine are very good from the factory, steel crank and rods, forged pistons and standard exhaust manifold all don't have to be changed for 500hp.
There was a White nova about a few years ago with a c20let that was around 400hp, also welsh coast customs had a yellow nova with approx 450hp.

Why would any one bother going aftermarket ecu when there mappable to start with.
Why would any one bother going aftermarket ecu when there mappable to start with.how?
Why would any one bother going aftermarket ecu when there mappable to start with.
Because they aren't completely mappable, and even the "best" remappers are only bashing about with a few of the many hundereds of parameters available in the oem ecu. Aftermarket gives total access to everything, all be it with worse software lol

The Z20LET engine has it's advantages and disadvantages over the C20LET
Advantages: Superior flash-mappable management system, coil-in-head, stronger oil pump.
Disadvantages: Open deck block, weaker pistons
I have a Z20LET in my Carlton (RWD), it's a good engine running a totally factory tall-block @347bhp. To get this a massive turbo, bigger injectors, FMIC and VXR AFM are all that it needed.
However it's widely regarded that over 300bhp on a standard block is a recipe for disaster (melting pistons, bending rods, collapsing cylinder walls, dogs and cats living together, fire and brimstone etc...).
Running big power on the Z20LET bottom end means at the very least doweling the block (to stop the cylinder walls popping outward), also stronger rods and pistons (VXR or C20LET pistons have been seen at 600bhp). That should be fine for 500bhp but to be honest all these engines are front wheel drive and even at 300bhp the first few gears are pretty useless and a bit of a waste.
I agree about the Z20LET management, ok ok using emulation, very expensive mapping hardware and a lot of time to decode the maps then yes they are as capable as an aftermarket ECU. But as mentioned by Stuart an aftermarket ECU is so much easier and accessible.
Rick's 500bhp Nova was more of a bhp chaser and a building exercise than a functional car from I can remember reading, I couldn't even imagine how lairy it must have been to drive!
