I know this is a Nova forum but you guys know your stuff so just picking your brains.

I'm currently having issues with my wife's focus, it's an on off problem with the temperature gauge and erratic idle.

Basically every so often the temperature gauge reads at the bottom or even a quarter when idling, once warmed up it will rise but then all of a sudden it will drop back to the minimum... Then the revs will increase to about 1.5k to 2k on tick over.
If I then turn the ignition off and back on the gauge goes back to halfway and will be okay again.

I've checked for split pipes and cannot see anything obvious, so I was maybe thinking its the thermostat or icv.

Btw I'm no mechanic so these are only guess work, so any help from you guys would be appreciated.

Thanks
David

any plugs around the underside of the black housing on the side of the block? check that for leaks while you are there, they distort over time, have changed a fair few of them. struggling to remember where the cts is tho. i second that vote btw

edit - whip the cam cover off, possibly between plug holes...

Cheers Asa, is it a straightforward part to swap then and will I need another rocker gasket?

Do the ford guys call them a cts as I can't find info on it apart from someone mentioning a cts at the back of the block under the alternator... The other place is next to the coilpack but I don't have one there as its blank.

Also I hate working on cars but also hate having to get my head around a Ford layout.

Andy, you are mad but thanks for helping ;)

I've been informed that I've got the engine with the sensor under the alternator, these have a cylinder head sensor, I'll have to take it to a garage for a look over I think.
