Hi, ive a 1.2 spi tank on my nova sri, with 16xe engine.

Had this setup since 2006 when I built the car, but ive had problems on 3 occasions now. (pump died, and the joiner hose between pump and lid split, and ive had the pump in and out countless times today and ive still not got it in and working)

The problem seems to be the length of the mpi pump, to get it to fit in the tank everything needs trimmed right down (the pump inlet and outlet, the joiner hose, and the tank lid all need shortened)

My tank is a pattern tank, so maybe the swirl pot isn't quite in the right place? or the tank isn't as deep as a gm one, im not sure.

Does anybody have pics of a sri/gsi/gte tank? Trying to see if I could fit a sri/gsi/get fuel pickup into the spi tank and fit an external pump?

Replace the pump with a piece of fuel hose, then run that to an external umo.

I've never had a problem with my spi tank and mpi pump. Miles better setup than external IMO.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking adam, I cant see any reason why the in tank pump couldn't be fitted externally (other then it being further from the tank and may not suck the fuel as well)

Pics/measurements of how much other people have shortened mpi pumps might help (I physically cant get mine any shorter, and its still a tight fit)

I ran a GTE tank with external pump, never had an issue.
Aimed at Chris btw.

just looked through 10 search pages, and 90% of the replys point to the mpi pump in spi tank, Will have to have another go when im at the garage next. Bloody think thing, its meant to be getting used for the summer, not stuck in the garage!

Yer i wish i had of done originaly but it dose look cleaner underneath with it hidden in the tank its just finding a decent place to mount it as my fuel lins are in the same position as the original carb ones u der the car

This is the GTE/GSI pick up pipe ( I don't have a pic if the tank )

It bolts into the tank at the rear and feeds the external pump.
I always thought the mpi pump was mounted on the top of the tank under the back seat?

Yeah it is, been running an MPI in-tank pump in an SPI tank for a while now and it's been spot on, I guess as you say aftermarket tolerances may crush the filter at the bottom of the pump and cause it to struggle?

it must be something like that iain, as I physically cant get it any shorter :( Going to have a look at other non gm pumps that flow the same volume and pressre (but are physically smaller)

I have an unmodified/standard/unshortened MPI pump running in there without problems for years now. Different tank or any way of modding where the swirl pot sits?
