Ok so some may know of the rather unfortunate events that ensued on my journey home.... So here's my album lol

On the m6 just on the m42 slip road after a rather interesting noise...

Engine been sent away to be checked over. Chap wanted the engine complete, so didn't do any per investigations re the damage, but valves are all intact which is good and those that look bent aren't too badly kinked...

Where's that bolt from? So it didn't snap it got thrown off by the bolt?
Humm, I hope you're lucky, but we both know the potential damage. Not good..

18-07-13, 09:52 AM
Not good, hope there isn't too much damage!

Will F
18-07-13, 09:54 AM
Yeah it was the tensioner bolt.. Same happened to my let last year! The engine builder is determined to develop something to prevent it I the future lol

I was only doing55-60 at the time, rather than 8300 rpm about three minutes earlier lol

Unlucky Will! Fingers crossed there isn't a great deal of damage!

scott.parker
18-07-13, 09:57 AM
Well that's probably what rattled it loose, them revs vibrate the entire car lol

johnd
18-07-13, 09:58 AM
hopefully not a lot of damage done will

Hope it works out not too bad Will, I wanted to sit in the seats while the car was there so i can decide whether to get some or not.

Will F
18-07-13, 10:04 AM
Lol, you should've collared me mate! It will be back on the road soon. I have spent too much getting it back on the road for it to be shoved back in the garage for years...
Engine owes me quite a bit, so if the pistons are scrap, then I will probably go let.

scott.parker
18-07-13, 10:08 AM
Well you have 4 weeks till retro ride, dig deep into the piggy bank..

BRoadGhost
18-07-13, 10:25 AM
Bad times. Well done for getting it all out so quickly after; am I right in thinking it's got bigger cams & different pistons?

Can't believe this has happened to you before; if it happened to me I'd be buying a 12.9 replacement, drilling the bolt, using lockwire and doing it up FT even after the builder had finished.

Will F
18-07-13, 11:09 AM
Lol, the builder is the most obsessive and meticulous guy you can ever meet, so I'm confident that wont be necessary.

Pistons are slipper, so they will have to be replaced by the same as the rods are slightly longer. Unfortunately for me they're the most expensive too! Hoping that its just valve train. But that won't be cheap either as they're one piece stainless and over size! Awesome lol.

Good to see you cracking on with it Will. :)

Heard about this, Bad luck dude.

At least it was on the way in like happened to a Calibra.

Adam
18-07-13, 03:29 PM
All that from a fooking bolt. Nightmare.

Fair play for cracking on with it.

Not good mate was good to see it back out again though

I got a new bolt for my engine after reading about your loon last year, back luck when it happened again!

Iain
18-07-13, 03:40 PM
Good job cracking on with it, looked great at Billing think I was parked next to you on Sunday

Will F
18-07-13, 07:03 PM
Cheers Iain and everyone for the comments.., engine builder is ex-Swindon block developer and has already told me that the bolt will be replaced with an m10 and the spacer modified to suit.

He also thinks that 1 and 3 piston are unmarked and 2 and 4 have small nicks... This was with the camera and he's taking the head off tomorrow for full prognosis, so fingers crossed its just a few valves!

Will F
18-07-13, 07:05 PM
For anyone that's interested, Swindon also have said that the m8 should never have been used by vauxhall on these engines and recommend to all customers, whatever the spec, that they are replaced with the m10 equivalent.

The fact that they are used on big torque let engines is frightening!

Adam
18-07-13, 07:48 PM
Sounds like you may have been lucky then with the damage. Well, as lucky as you could be in your situation.

Nick J
19-07-13, 09:07 PM
Very sorry to see this Will..... It's a cracking looker for a track car and I hope you have it back up and running soon.

Nick.

So it was the same bolt both times? That's very very worrying.

19-07-13, 11:37 PM
Glad your getting it sorted mate bit of a ****ter it happened though! The exact same thing happened on mine to bent all 8 exhaust valves and cracked 2 guides. Never thought of using an m10 probably a worth while thing to do

matthew172
20-07-13, 06:55 AM
that's a ****ter, same happened to one of my previous cars, very disheartening when such a small component can cause so much grief

hope damage aint too bad

Errr, what and where is this bolt that youre talking about, as im completely in the dark?

Hope the damage is just limited to a few valves btw!

cambelt tensioner bolt spud.

Spudly
20-07-13, 01:36 PM
Are they prone to coming undone then, im assuming thats what happened here, tensioner fell off due to the bolt winding itself out?

Will F
20-07-13, 01:38 PM
They are just 8mm both tensioners! I am having both mine modifies by Swindon as that's on their standard build sheet apparently...

Engine is now mostly stripped...

Pistons seem fine, but will be crack tested its taken out just 6 valves, so I was really lucky!

Benn
20-07-13, 01:40 PM
Glad it's not looking too day.

Will F
20-07-13, 01:40 PM
I am getting it fully done while its all apart, it was getting refreshed at the end of the year, so may as well so it now!

20-07-13, 01:44 PM
Good news - in the circumstances - so far, then.

Yours is definitley one of my favourite Novas. Purposeful, and pretty. Bang on.

Will F
20-07-13, 01:50 PM
Cheers! I could've lost my rag and rammed it back in the garage for years again, but luckily Billing and the trip there made me want to keep it alive this year!

20-07-13, 01:58 PM
Sort of good news pal! Time scale for rebuild?

BRoadGhost
20-07-13, 03:17 PM
Is it just a case of redrilling & tapping then for the M10 thread on the block?

Looks like you might be running a little lean also.

Will F
20-07-13, 03:28 PM
Nah it's not lean, it's running the richer side of normal... Whitish marks are from where he has rubbed the carbon off to see the damage.

It's re drilling the block, making a 10mm spacer and opening up the tensioners to accept the larger bolt.

Peter, not sure. It's 60 to 70 hours work as quoted by the chap, so a few weeks hopefully!

jimbob-mcgrew
20-07-13, 07:06 PM
that takes the piss... what a nightmare !
sorry to see will.

whats up with those bolts anyhow ? sh1t design, too skinny ? ... I guess Loctite wouldn't be enough ?

Adam
20-07-13, 08:06 PM
Tensioner and its bolt is always going to be a weak spot of any cambelt engine tbh.
But a thicker bolt is always going to add some peace of mind.

Spudly
20-07-13, 08:12 PM
How do you fit a bigger bolt, drill it out and re-thread it to a size bigger?

Will F
21-07-13, 12:40 AM
Drill and re tap. Make a new spacer and drill out the tensioner to accept the new bolt.

It's not that they are coming loose, they are snapping. Too skinny.

bazil
21-07-13, 12:49 AM
Excuse my ignorance but why is a spacer required? ( is there one used on the standard setup? )

I'm only asking as it may be a modification worth mentioning to my friend who runs a LET,

matthew172
21-07-13, 09:45 AM
spacer is the part that goes beween the pulley and the block and the bolt goes through the middle, the std one could possibly be drilled out to m10 but unsure

Will F
21-07-13, 10:42 AM
You can't drill out the std spacer. It would be far too thin. I will be doing it for all future builds that's for sure! Lol

BRoadGhost
21-07-13, 06:39 PM
When you look at the video I posted a while back of:-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Unc3OrRy3Gs&list=UUPwU1a0boTtKgh6yFojgSow&index=38

you can see the development gone even beyond what you're doing. Must be because of high rpm belt resonance at a tension not tight enough to snap camshaft(s).

Will F
22-07-13, 10:06 AM
Yeah that's the Exon lump... He's built some crazy xes... If your revving passed 9000 imagine the belt movement and shifts in energy when you're shifting gears! Those 8mm bolts seem completely useless in that situation! Lol

Riggy
22-07-13, 05:54 PM
Glad to hear it not as bad as it could have been will :)
