View Full Version : nova c20let suspension help
Hi I'm new to the vauxhall scene but have always loved nova c20lets so I recently got myself one. Im really enjoying the car the engine seems to be pretty sweet and pulls very well. However it feels like the*ball*joints*track rods etc have all seen better days. Is there a easy way to tell which*ball joints, track rods wish bones etc I have? As id like to replace everything and freshen it all up a bit. Oh and also which driveshafts I have as a cv boot has split.
Cheers
Its 95% all standard stuff (track rods etc). If you post a picture of the shafts, and tre's etc, i can tell you whats what.
Cheers mate, not sure if pics are the best but can get better ones later if necessary.

Cheers mate have sent you a couple of pics. Very much appreciated :)
For track rod ends, ball joints etc make sure you get OE quality stuff and not un branded stuff from euro car parts
Astra GTE (big block) CV gaitor
standard Nova everything else.
F28 gearbox too eh

Cheers mate absolute legend! Yeah has the f28 :) so just to clarify apart from the driveshafts I just want to buy standard gsi parts?
@mieran, don't worry mate OEM all the way, buy cheap ya buy twice lol. I will be making this a absolute minter gonna start sanding all the body work down this weekend then hoping ill have the time to spray it next weekend. Has had all the rust repaired already so paint is abit all over the place.
Another quick question, what is the minimum size wheels you can get over the Astra turbo brakes? Believe they are 308's. I really want to run 15s on it as not to keen on the 17s currently on it. My clip cup is a very tight fit with 280s under 15s so I'm assuming ill need a different brake setup, can anyone recommend me one to allow 49ers to fit :)
Cheers and sorry for barrage of questions lol.

Where is best place to buy genuine parts? Is it a dealership jobby? Or is there an alternative?
I have never had problems with pattern parts and ive raced and rallied all my cars. (With rock hard supsension and bushes etc)
Rally design is good for uprated bushes
I'm going to replace every single bushing and ball joint on the car I want to make it real tight and handle like it is new. I've come over from been a Renault fanboy so used to very nimble and agile handling cars, hoping to get the nova handling somewhere near the standards of my 172 cup but with 20let pull :)
Got a couple of slightly off topic question.. Are all the c20let oil filters the same? Gonna do a big service including belts just for piece of mind. Is there any special locking tools required to set the timing belt tension? With the Renault f4r they made it so you need loads of daft locking tools to correctly tension the belt :s Also hoping to start sanding and rubbering her down for a respray this weekend and hopefully spray it next weekend, not sure what colour I want to do tho :s so im open to suggestions, was kinda thinking a yellow with white rims.
All the oil filters are the same (vauxhall vof93). Also no special tools required but an extra set of hands really does make life easier when doing cambelt (can be done on own)

Message Jonlem from here - He makes an uprated arm and tie rod set - Well worth the money and will transform the front end. Will try and drag a picture out for you.

Nice one mate, looks to be a decent piece of kit. Do you know if the standard nova bushes fit the custom wishbone? Do they make a good improvement handling wise? Also any idea of a rough estimate on what he charges and if he even still makes them? I noticed its a thread from 09.
Cheers

The kit converts to rose joints rather than rubber bushes.
I have never driven a car with this but I suggest a PM to Jonlem. I would imagine the kit is around £500 and the handling will be much improved but that's just a guess.
You may as well upgrade the bottom ball joints to Compbrake or hockley at the same time - Oh and fix that CV boot ;)
Ok mate ill send him a pm. where would I get the compbrake or hockley lower ball joints from? Had a little search and couldn't find anything. Is there any uprated tre's on the market?
Sorry about all the questions, just I've never owned a vauxhall in my life.

Give these a try. Your entering into motorsport component territory so all the major motorsport parts providers such as Rally design will be able to help. Expect to spend a few quid though.
Not to concernd with spending a few pennies, just want it to be right and the best it can be handling wise plus coming from a Renault and nissan background everything seems incredibly cheap so far lol. Spent the last day and a half prepping the body for spray so might as well bring the suspension up the standards of the engine and paint and go all out on it. I'm looking to make a real mint example, the main problem I'm having is deciding on a colour for it, not sure wether to go for something vibrant or a more retro colour.

Get a thread going in the projects section ;)
Yeah will post one up when I've got a bit done.
I keep reading about these equal length driveshafts that help with the torque steer, where would I get a set if these from and would I need anything to make them work? I'm assuming I don't have them lol but not had the chance to actually get under the car yet.

I might be persuaded to part with my rose jointed TCA's. A good mod.
Are you running an upper strut brace?
Yeah got a strut brace on the car. Send me a pm with what your looking for if your interested in selling the tca's.

I only ever run Vauxhall bottom ball joints after a bad Experience with aftermarket, had one fitted by a garage an 2 days later it snapped clean off were the pinch bolt goes so took it back to garage who was a mate who contacted the supplier who were very appolagetic and sent another same thing a week later so back to the garage and a gm one was fitted problem solved never happened again, that was on an xe nova about 14 years since. But I know alot have used none genuine without a problem I just don't want it happening again
I will be using genuine parts, I want to change them and be done with it and not have to worry.
Just had a quick look under car and looking for little confirmation on wether these are equal length shafts or not, I appreciate the pics are quite poor but just wondered if anyone can tell from just looking at these pics? Summit happened and for some reason pics have been rotated a bit, but you get the idea lol.

That is a one piece setup - Equal length is 2 equal length shafts with a mounting point on the block.

As per this ^^^^^^^^^
Yeah I figured it was probably single shaft but thought it was worth asking. Don't suppose anyone can send me in the right direction for a set of the equal lengths? Really fancy a set as the torque steer is summit special lmao, don't get me wrong its kinda fun but reckon the car would be alot more useable if it was tamed a little.

Keep an eye on the for sale forums - They pop up now and again.
Hi guys, found these on ebay. Does anyone know if they will fit my setup?

Regarding taming it - Turn the boost down :)
That could be an option I suppose lol. Would rather try the equal lengths and a suspension refresh first though, plus tracking is definitely out so that can't be helping. I get proper ocd over my cars, I want it to be the best it can be. Might consider a manual boost controller but I love having the power there plus its reasonable if you control the throttle a bit its just when your stomp your right boot it gets a bit wild lol.
Anyone got any idea about those shafts on ebay?
There's nothing wrong with wanting to make the most out of the components you've got and the power you have, not really OCD.
eBay Corsa shaft won't fit a Nova. The equal length inner bit will be usable but you'll need a conversation outer shaft. David Dixon here sells them doesn't he?
Tracking seems to make a huge difference to the amount of torque steer, or what feels like torque steer, I get on my XE.

Tracking is vital as Iain says. You will notice a huge difference once this is setup correctly.
That said, I noticed a nice difference with the equal shafts on my XE too so definitely worth exploring that route.
