So apart from the obvious, such as good looks to secure the door, has anyone ever thought of, of fitted a basic car alarm system to there garage, eg wired to the mains via a 12 volt converter, and backed by up by a battery?

that's a good idea.
if I had a garage id probably do that myself. and set up a few Vietnam style boobie traps to impale spikes into intruders

An alarm is ok but most people ignore them now so if your not in when it goes off nothing will probably happen infact you will probably get someone complain its been going off all day and they will have done sod all about it!

argos shed alarms are cheap enough.

i have one that has a simple wire that can be connected to any number of switches, and as long as the circuit is intact, no noise... break the circuit & lots of noise...

but... most sheds & garages can be broken into by making a hole in the wall..

My garage is sandwiched between two neighbours property's, so there only two ways in through a windo I've blocked off, and the up and over door.

When I caught some foreign cnuts breaking in my garage I electrified the door off the mains, never had any bother after that

Put bolt locks at either side of the bottom of the up n over door as they are easy to bend up from the bottom. And one on the top so it can't go in.

i've seen similar comments over the years and always wondered how do you do that exactly?? cos simply earthing it would blow out a trip or a fuse, thus rendering it useless..

a decent electric stock fence would be pretty good, but arming it means getting a shock from it

A mate who's a Sparky rigged mine up, few wires and clips iirc, as my garage was under my flat I had it plugged in upstairs, tbh tho I never tested it lol

scott. you will never fully protect your garage.

all you can do is to put would be burglars off enough that they get bored.

lots of sliding bolts, expensive padlocks etc, & a shed alarm will annoy them a lot.

It's where Nick Caro does or used to work. If he is still there he may be able to sort you out.

i don't really have any security around my garage or yard just 2 shotguns! my back yark is closed off by a gate. i keep saying i will fit cctv cameras and fit a sign on the gate so better do it before its to late.

I have a ridgeback to alert me and a huge pick axe handle behind the front door. The last person I caught breaking in my shed got the pasting of his life as a warning to all local theives. Needless to say they avoid the place now lol

I have a electric door on garage and it holds top of door in closed position well!
Plus my other car in front of door (which is alarmed) and flood lit if anyone goes nr it! And dogs that go mentel if they hear anyone.

Mine has four looks on the inside, also car is chained to the floor aswell, plus also going to weld a plate with two hooks on,so I can put a scaffold pole in the hooks, scaffold pole got cut out for hooks,so it sits over the door, that's what my mate down to his

Also Scott you can get cheap alarms from maplins

They also do a alarm thing called a screamer 120db very loud

Here's a few alarms on here
http://www.c-p-p.co.uk/home-security/door-security/

http://mobile.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=30579

The only thing with alarms that have sensors,in a garage,if you get any rats or mice, that triggers them off

Also what one of my other mates done, was had a metal gate behind his garage door

It depends how mad you wanna go

You could also put a pull up parking pole in front of you garage door,or get one that pulls out from the floor, only thinking of if car is low

can people please stop telling the world what security they have....

ps... all this chain & scaffold isn't worth sod all if you are away & someone with a stihl saw turns up to rob the place..

a neighbour left his house & garage keys inside his car, which was locked inside his garage, and he came round to see if i knew anyone who might help... i got past his 'security' bolts in about 10 seconds & there were no visible signs i'd done it... he was mortified

my advice is to fit what you think is a clever setup, then try to break into it... if you can, then it isn't good enough

you can buy wireless alarms from machine mart
google a website called spy bike they make a tracker for mountain bikes fit the tracker in the garage door a few seconds of vibration trigger the tracker witch then sends a text to your mobile (have an old charge once a week phone under your bed)

there in a motor cycle chain lock that cannot be cut manually ( the chain links are hexagon) I ve seen a video of a fat bloke with new bolt cutters attempting to cut it for 10 mins

Bolt croppers are meant for low tensile stuff. Stihl saws make easy work of it. And cordless grinders are getting better. Mini oxy acetylene kits are good too. Usually crowbars do the trick
