I'm trying to convince the wife to camp overnight at Billing with the kids, I don't own a tent nor am I camp (lol)

Any recommendations for a cheap 4 man tent with the camp bits required, what do I absolutely need?

Halfords normally do some decent deals on tents with sleeping bags and stuff.

either go on ebay, or find a budget hotel nearby.

ps. the thread title is somewhat misleading

Most of the reviews I saw for argos vary a lot, lots complain of leaks.

I'll look at decathlon and the halfords bundle. Cheers

If you're going to be using it for Billing, make sure it's got built in floating features lol

if you've got the wife an 2 kids with you, youll probably want a 6 man, with some sort of external awning for bags and storage, as a 4 man will be tight, and have only enough space for sleeping bags alone.

I would recommend a vango tent, but there kinda pricey for a single time use.
something like this would be good for you I reck.

2 rooms, good enough for 2 people each, one for you and the mrs, and other for kids. central bag storage and space. doubles up as rain shelter if weathers pants.
its 9 kilo's packed weight, so its gotta be transported by car, don't try and carry it long distance in a rucksack, or it will kill you,. trust me lol

Have a look on tesco website ;) they have some decent tents at low prices and they also sell good sleeping bags at knock down prices!
You can buy a compact stove and small gas cans from them too.
Even pots and pans ;)

I was gonna say, if it says 2man, its for 1. 3man is for 2. Get a 6 for you, the wife and kids, nick and your girl can have a bit each that way.

If not, but a cheap 2/3 man tent and have a cheekyweekend away.

Cheers fella, 6 man makes sense room wise, especially is everyone enjoys it.

Thanks, I found a 4 man in Tesco for £25, they are dirt cheap.

If I could come without the kids I'd have a 1 man and sleep on the missus.

6 man it is I think. The only good thing about a 4 man is they are cheap but no doubt the kids will love it and want to do more of it and it won't be big enouh, the wife wants to go camping in the new forest so a 6 man should get more use.

Thanks for all the replies, I checked north face as i love their stuff and they do a £200 sleeping bag:eek:

I love camping and spend around 10 weekends every year in a tent due to my bike racing and festivals, the bigger the better tent wise, an airbed is a must aswell as a gas cooker and plenty of battery/wind-up lighting.... Everything else is a luxury.

Go outdoors can be very good, My 3man pop up tent was £20 cheaper on there than where i got it from, and if there is a local one that have all the tents up out side, so you can go walk/climb in and out of them see what they are like.. Very handy! As you can see what the size really is.

Edit, see here Jeff. Nice and close iirc and they had "tent" days...

what are those popups like against wind and rain benn ?

I had a look at one a few years back... threw it up in the air as high as I could, and the flat disc sprung open into a dome shape and landed on the floor. 6 pegs to hold it down and it was pitched in about 60 seconds. it did seem a bit on the flimsy side, but you've gotta expect that due to the nature of the design.

I would rather chew broken glass than sleep in a tent lol

edd, i agree with you... my biggest bugbear is sleeping on an air mattress that isn't level...

i bought a trailer tent.. folds out in seconds. levels up in minutes... job jobbed, & i have room in my car for other stuff instead of filling it with camping gear

Mines been great, didn't leak at all last year bar a bit at the bottom that was under the water. Great in the wind.

Snap, hate it. But if you must, you need room and a soft bed.

I'm now the owner of a tent, got this one below, didn't want a dome as they seem cramped for 4 of us.

Reduced at halfords to £79.99 but an extra 20% online at the moment also so £63.00.

The sleeping bag are thin summer ones and the foam mats aren't going to be comfortable enough so wont get used but I already have a double air mattress in the loft for me and the wife and we can get another for the kids room.

What do you all think?

Do I have to bring water or is there clean water to fill a bottle at Billing?

Jeff. For the love of god make sure you bring a life preserver or two. Iirc it was Liam and his brother woke up feeling slightly seasick as they were floating! I go camping quite a lot. So have got plenty of experience. As I proved last year. No one leak or problem with the rain haha.
