Is it worth the hassle power wise to bother putting a 1400 block on a fairly bogo 1300 sr ? As I'm gaining its about 5 hp if that
its worth more like 10hp. but what is actually wrong with the 1300??
OP, finding some brand new 12st pistons, and boring out the 1300 block to fit them will make a lot more power, cos it will make 11:1cr.. but they are getting rare these days

^ im with mowgli... the 1.4's nice, with a wee bit more power and torque, but as he says, If the 1300's still strong, you might as well keep it

The 1300 is mint absolutely sweet as a nut just wanting more power , and there is no short of low mileage 1400 blocks ( mainly thanks to auto corsa b 's ) so thought it may be a good mod without the expense of big boring

do you wanna keep it smallblock for the cheaper tax band and petrol ?
I was gonna suggest a cam, for a slightly more aggressive rev band. but for the price of buying and fitting it, you might be able to pickup a 1.4 for nearly the same money.
I hear the 1.6 16v is a bit of a beast, but then your crossing tax bands, and have to faff about changing petrol tanks, fuel lines, re-wiring and all sorts, and will cost a fair bit more.
you could always stick with the 1300 and rag the nuts out of it lol - your call !

I'm considering a cam as well , Im trying to keep it in looking unmodified and without really looking for it I don't reckon
You would be able to look at it and know those bits were there

first priority is a decent ported head.
then get a camshaft reground at somewhere like autosprint..
then get it set up properly by a decent old school garage...
you could swap the carb to a weber replacement.
it would take a lot of looking to find any of that once its fitted to your car.
it would also go rather well...
fitting a 1400 bottom end from a corsa would stick out like a sore thumb, simply cos of the engine no.

Many thank for the advice mowgli going to look up autosprint now , is the head on the 1300 sr not pretty good any way and there for difficult to get much better for a fast road purpose ?

And jimbob I would love to c16xe it but I stumbled upon mine and found out it may be the lowest mileage mk 1 sr left so i can't over mod it really as much as I may want to :-(

autosprint is in birmingham,
and the sr engine is absolutely bog standard gm 1300... getting it ported & fitting valves from an e16se/c16se would really make it breathe well.

Awesome shout to go to auto sprint mowgli , very nice , very helpfully and rediculously well priced . He advised me on a 290 degree camshaft and followers , I'm slightly woried 290 sounds a bit much for fast road ?
i think it will be fine on a 1300 carb engine.. its got no emissions crap to worry about

I meant from a ticking over / driving point of view , I'm expecting it to be a bit more lumpy but didn't want it to be a dog to drive around

290 sounds good. it shouldn't run lumpy if its set up well

Awesome , last question on this topic can you set it up ok without a vernier pulley?

Cam, twin carbs and a decent exhaust system
verniers rarely seem to improve things on a single cam road engine
