Had a busy old week at the workshop as the guys from UPG arrived with their nova on Monday which had dropped a valve and made a severe mess off the engine!

This was the damage

Due to the rarity of the rods and pistons the engine was rebuilt with some lesser spec items dropping the compression slightly and limiting the rpm to 9500

Yesterday after running the engine in on one dyno we ran out of time and fortunately the guys at RGS Motorsport allowed us to use theirs up until 9.30pm which is when we decided it had made enough power given the time we had available.

End results were 244hp at the wheels, getting on 290hp at the fly, revving it to 9450. Down on the old engine power but still a massive amount of hp from a naturally as aspirated 2l engine.

The car is being run on Sunday at PV Show if your going, they are aiming to crack a 10 second pass, their pb so far is a 11 dead but they haven't run on a track as good as the pod so fingers crossed they get the results.

Cracking time James so far.
More to come?

They should improve their 60ft a fair bit, a tenth on the 60ft is generally worth 2/10's at the 1/4 so a 10.3 is possible if nothing breaks. I'm hoping they pack up for the day as I'd like to see it when we go tomorrow

Thats really good power James ,what CR are they running ?

It was 13:1 but no idea now. Christian who is their mechanic for the tour literally had to work with what was available. The engine is quite a serious spec but to my surprise it is on a stock crank !

Sounds excellent looking forward to seeing this tomorrow

Thats brave revving it that high on a stock crank ,fantastic power whatever

Brave yes but I watched it do that over 50 times last night, they have run that crank for several years now without an issue, bearing clearances and dry sump setup is very specific on the engine. Cams are rated from 6000-10000rpm !

Do you know if on stock journal, knife edged etc? Impressive all round matey. Fingers crossed can shave abit more time. Would be impressive if could run a 9sec given time/engine spec.

What was the cause of it dropping a valve?

Stock journal, not knife edged.

Dropped a valve because they miss shifted at high rpm, I heard they done that again today so fingers crossed they didn't bust it !

Sounds like they need a clicky box ,might be cheaper in the long run,are they using 5mm valves ?

It has a quaife sccr in there, quite shocked that hadn't given up yet !

Valves are indeed 5mm, beryllium seats etc, head is very serious and expensive

Head sounds similar to the spiess f3 heads, used to run 14:1cr, LR, beryllium seats, huge lift short duration cams with 34mm buckets instead of 32mm.

Fingers crossed engines in 1 piece still.

But a LET is much better because it only needs 600BHP to get into 10's over the quarter ;P

;) It's (was) a great engine - Imagine it with a proper crank in a stronger ally block revving higher! :0

I would love to build an engine similar to theirs, learnt a lot in the last few days ! That said I'm not sure I could use a stock crank lol

It's an awesome car certainly.

Crazy watching it pull an endo a third of the way down the track yesterday with the miss shift.

Yes I heard about that ! Glad it didn't damage it lol
