Hey guys. Had engine out and put back in again but now when I start it a turn the key it fires up and runs but as soon as the key springs back it cuts out. If I hold it on the start it stays running. Any ideas? Cheers

You must have a wire that needs to be a permanent live thats switched instead. Not too familiar with the C16SE loom though

agree with mk1nova_rich. did you alter the wiring?

small wires on the starter the wrong way around ?

Unlikely to be starter as once the engine is running the solenoid is switched anyway

Sounds like you have a switched live and perm live mixed up somewhere .

Is it an se or xe

If it was a switched live that needed to be permanant, it would still be on at position 2...

I'd be looking at the ignition switch because for some reason it's turning something off with the starter motor.

Either that or you have the starter solenoid wire t'd into something else somewhere?

:wtf: using that theory starter motors would always be engaged and spinning

no?

Pos 1 steering lock

Pos 2 ignition live (there's actually 2 stages on a nova iirc)

Pos 3 start

The problem he has, is if he holds the key at pos 3, it keeps running, but as soon as he drops it back to pos 2, it stops. Unless I misunderstood the OP.

Yea that right it runs on pos 3 but as soon as springs back to position 2 it cuts out

So your engines ignition live is actually somehow running off pos3 of the ign key instead of pos2.
Have you touched NO wiring at all?

Does the ecu light come on with the ignition?

Hence its something that needs to be permanent live that is switched (by Position 3) instead of being
permanent on Position 2. So basically you have twice tried to contradict me yet just backed up what I originally identified as the probable problem

How can it be a permanent live on position 2? Permanent live is just that, permanent, I.E on all the time, no matter the position.

Position 2 is the switched, or ignition live?

Not trying to contradict anyone, just help the guy with his problem.

I was referring to it in the sense that it stays live once the ignition is on, whereas on Pos 3 its switched so once released it switches off again

Fair enough, but your terminology was confusing. Everywhere I've ever seen it used, switched (or ignition) live means position 2 on the key, and perm. live means connected to 12v+ on the battery, including proper wiring diagrams.

Pos 3 is just starter and I've never seen it called "switched live" as there's no actual live feeds (bar the starter relay obviously) switched at that position normally.

Sorry :)
