Haha my nova has to be my favourite! Nah I don't really have a fav anymore but will always pick old school cars over modern cars :)

I thought it was down to mis-matched exhausts on the Impreza, its not just a boxer thing. E.g. the GT86 doesn't sound like its missing a spark plug lol

The exhaust ports on the head are slightly longer on one side.

VR6 VW gives that odd burbly sound for the same reason, 3 of the intake/exhaust ports are about twice as long as the others.

edit: Why it's the port length that screws it rather than the exhaust length I don't know, I would have thought it's all the same to exhaust gas. But it's most likely down to firing orders, generally an unequal length cast iron header on a standard car is unequal between 1 and 4, 2 and 3 ?
