Ive fitted 4 point racing harnesses into my car they arr anchored to the standard anchor points and mounted safely and correct in the rear of the car but the police say they can fine me for not wearing a standard seatbelt.

Can someone link me to documents stating that harnesses are legal instead of factory fitted belts or tell me how to get them checked and clarification that I can use them

Cheers

They have to be dot approved and also it is technically illegal and stupid to use with standard seats. If you have bucket seats then there fine. Afaik

Agreed, should be used in conjunction with bucket seats and routed through the proper harness holes.

I am using these with bucket seats but surely they are legal as they offer increased safety ??

I believe they need to have standard push button buckle. Or so I read when I was buying my set.

As far as I'm aware it's the quick release ones that are not road legal.( correct me if I'm wrong) The copper was probably bored lol

I had both types and imo the twist release were a lot safer... Wouldn't like to have to get out quickly in the seat belt clasp type.

How can I get this sorted so I can use the harnesses for daily driving and not worry about getting pulled ??

What about popping to your local vosa and ask them to check it and possibly give you some sort of certification?

The reason behind it is the standard big red push button is easily recognisable to emergency services or a passer by when you're unconscious.

Although the quick release ones are pretty foolproof imo, that's what I read somewhere when I was looking up legalities of it.

Ah, never thought of it that way...

Plus push button ones are designed release even when they are under pressure. (hanging upside down)

It`ll come under construction and use regs. Has he actually given you a ticket or just bitched at you about it? Have a look at http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/47/made and you can read up on the seat belt laws.

A copper saying they can fine you for something means absolutely nothing, ignore it.

I have Sabelt harness's with the twist release in my nova & never had an issue with either police or MOT.
Every rally car be it club or WRC has this style & drive on public roads between stages with no issues, think your copper was just bored & wanted to pick on something.
The police can't know every single rule & regulation as they change so often, he probably had never seen them before & just went for the not road legal approach!
