View Full Version : Bmw n47 derv engine issues?
So it appears the era of 20d cars I'm looking at have the chain of doom issue... Is it a mega problem or just something a few unlucky people suffer?
Can I DIY the chain and associate bits on the cheap?

I know naff all about these but this maybe of some help... You've probably seen it though:
BMWme (http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/f74/n47-timing-chain-failures-influencing-factors-t119594/)
Yep read that... Is all a bit vague.
Read my thread on here gay boy!lMy 123 was subject to a £5k bill from Dick Lovesit thanks to the shonky crank on the n47
Ps unless you can get a 2009 onward crank on the cheap and fit it yourself, it's not really a cheap DIY job. Plus you have to remove the engine to swap chains... (But that isn't the issue)
Deep joy.... Petrol engines it is then
Although the one I've found locally is an m47 engined beast. :)

You know what, althought I love BMW's and they build a cracking car if I needed a daily that had to be 100% reliable and prestige, I would be tempted by a Lexus. They just dont seem to wear out. We have had a few in at work, high mileage ones as well and they seem to last really well. One of the lads that used to work at our place has one of the early is200's or whatever the model is and it had done epic mileage. Passed MOT with no advisories recently. May be worth a look.
If you go for a BMW you will not be disappointed though, if you do go petrol a six cylinder is so worth while.
Well I will now be doing upto 50miles a week, if that so could maybe consider something a little thirstier... But then cheapness of ved etc on a 2.0derv is more appealing

The cheap VED is appealing but if you are only doing 50 miles a week then the increased price of diesel and the premium to buy a diesel will cancel out any saving on VED.
The minimal mileage causung EGR and partic filter issues will not help either.
Meh 120d with an m47 engine has been purchased lol
Under budget, cheap to keep on the road and gives spare cash for a tosser fold up bike for commuting with :)

Only thing I found with the pre-facelift 1 Series is they used too much interior plastics, feels a little cheap. Other than that they are a great car.
50 miles?! is that it?! get on yer bike lol

The wife has a 118d M Sport Coupe and she absolutely loves it. She had it from new as a company car and it was bought through where I used to work so I specced it up well :).
She loves it that much that she bought it off the lease company, it is immaculate(Only ever washed by me) and has only covered about 16,000 miles in three years.
I have had loads of 1 series & 3 series as company cars when I worked for BMW, excellent cars and everything else feels cheap in comparison.
123d was one of my fave demo's, it was a rapid little thing.
Very impressed with the 20, feels way faster but less hurried than the pd130 at the moment
Anything will feel better than the passata lol
The extra 40 horse power helps too...

Only 30 more with the older engines.
