Define fast, since nothing mentioned will actually be 'fast'

But if he had to sell the evo to afford a mortgage, can he afford the running costs (by that I mean maintenance) of something 'fast'?

Everything mentioned is still fast enough to loose your licence in

This is true yeah, but compared to what you can buy now for £3k on a new style reg plate (02>) I say there mostly slow lol (as standard) and definetly very low spec.

its more needing the bulk for the deposit, he does alright money wise.

face facts here... any petrol car that has a turbo & is worth 1K will be a wreck

also any petrol car that has a turbo & is worth 3k won't be much better....

for 3K with a mortgage, i'd downgrade for a few years, and buy something boring like an astra

My vote would go to a seat Leon Cupa r. It will be quick enough to have a bit of fun in and still be practical for trips to b&q when he gets the house

I know its not about supercars, but that's the thing, most cars simply aren't that fast in reality.

And a 6 to sixty car, well meh.
I'd be looking at big petrol engined bmw's or perhaps 850 t5's for cheap reasonable pace.

I would go for a big volvo like the 850R or v70 t5r. Big, safe, decent mileage when driving normal and plenty of poke for overtaking.
Plus if he goea for the estate you would have 7 seats or plenty of boot space:)

I would pile the 3k into the mortgage and buy a sensible car. in a few years the extra 3k will have saved enough in interest payments to fund a higher priced car. its common sence that 3k will work better for you that way than depreciating on your drive and needing twice the budget to keep it running.

I've been doing pretty much that, me and my wife car share a Focus to clear some of our mortgage off... Only now 10 years left which is about 45k, it's bloody hard for me not having a project and especially not owing a Nova.

I'll be mortgage free at 50, harsh but well I'll be able to rent out my current house and put a down payment for another without issues... It will help my family out in years to come, I'll be skint but they'll have a better life ;)

his words to me were "i want something fast that turns peoples heads" unfortuntly i dont think a td beemer will cut it

he should keep the evo and rent, buying houses is for growen ups lol

meritlover
29-05-13, 04:08 PM
Buying houses is for grown ups, the problem is by the time some people decide its time to finally buy a house, they realise theyve spent the last 15 years paying off someone elses mortgage and not their own while spending the rest of their money of fast cars. At least now theres the excuse that the financial crisis made it 'impossible' for anyone to ever possibly buy a house.....

We're looking to buy at the moment and a house similar to what we were renting is two thirds of the price per month. So although you get things fixed for "free" by your land lord in reality you are paying for that privilege.

Renting is far from great. But there's good and bad to both.

Over half your mortgage payment is rent to the bank.... Not such a great deal when you look at the grand scheme of things.

Southie
29-05-13, 08:55 PM
My mortgage is my pension with making plenty on the original purchase so its the only way I can really go, I've spent plenty on car projects in the past 20 years so owning my own house and being mortgage free at 50 will do me fine.

29-05-13, 08:59 PM

It is when your mortgage is half the price of rent and you get to keep a house at the end of it

Jack
30-05-13, 07:50 AM
My mortgage is my pension
^ This.

We're looking at buying next year, a quick looksee shows that mortgages for us will be roughly about the same price as renting, but thats mainly as we'll struggle to get more than a 10% deposit.

There's no chance our crappy pensions will cover rental payments when we're old and crinkly, assuming I live that long lol So it would be nice to own a house, or at least as much of a house as possible before the income dries up.

Get a mortgage with no overpayment fees

Soon see the balance come down then, I over pay £200 a month, with doing that and changing rates we've knocked 10 years off in 2
